How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)

As a Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer, you will lead mechanical design activities as part of a product development team to develop lighting systems, enclosures, storage, and transport fixtures for various industries and end customers. Your collaborative efforts will extend across various engineering disciplines, encompassing electrical, firmware, software, and laboratory teams. Working with cross-functional units, including manufacturing, purchasing, customer service, and quality assurance, you will ensure the successful development and launch of premium-quality products. Your responsibilities will also encompass the design, testing, and development of products and their components, aligning with our company's and industry's exacting standards. What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)

While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:

Project Management, Support and Leadership:

Collaborate with Product Management and other functions to create and revise product design specifications.

Provide expert technical support and assistance to various departments, including Operations/Manufacturing, Quality, Customer Service, Lab Supervision, Product Managers, and Purchasing.

Identify potential technical improvements for existing products, processes, or services, as well as opportunities for cost reduction.

Lead cross-functional teams in developing, maintaining, and updating Design Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (DFMEAs), and assist in the creation of Process Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (PFMEAs) and Process Control Plans.

Mechanical System Design and Development:

Design and engineer mechanical systems and components for various devices, adhering to company and industry standards, encompassing enclosures, brackets, bearings, seals, controls, and more.

Conduct in-depth analysis, simulations, and calculations to assess and enhance the performance, efficiency, and durability of components and systems.

Product Design, Collaboration, and Quality Assurance:

Generate 3D models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks, ensuring alignment with industry standards and best practices.

Collaborate with design professionals on detailed layout, prints, parts specifications, and bill of materials for the product.

Develop unconventional test methods, instrumentation, and procedures, going beyond recognized Approval Agency requirements or rating codes.

Analyse and interpret test data, making design modifications if necessary to meet product performance and safety requirements.

Conduct product and component testing in accordance with standards and recognized approval agency requirements and codes, such as UL, ANSI, ISO, and/or CSA.

What we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education)

We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:

Required Experience

6 - 10 years of experience in mechanical engineering, specifically in the design and development of OEM products, sealed enclosures, sheet metal components, electronics packaging, and injection molded plastics.

Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) for 3D modeling.

Proficiency with SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Experience with full product development lifecycle, from conception to product release.

Expert level knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and design and its application in industrial designs.

Proficiency in working with welded steel and aluminum structures as well as plastic injection molded parts.

Proficiency with design practices for effective heat management utilizing both conductive and convective heat transfer.

Understanding of implications of manufacturing processes on design requirements.

Experience with packaging electronics for industrial NEMA 4 applications.

Proficiency with dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) mechanical principles.

Education & Certifications

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or a related field. Master's degree preferred.

Travel & Working Environment

Normal work hours are 8am to 5pm Mon-Fri
