Saint Francis International School is located in Silver Spring, MD and serves students in PreK3 through grade 8. We are a Catholic school and part of the Archdiocese of Washington. We are currently seeking Dean of Student Life for the 2024-25 school year.

The Dean of Student Life is a full-time, salaried position with a 12-month work schedule.

The Dean of Student Life is one of the educational leaders of the school as a member of the administrative team. The Dean of Student Life will report to the principal. Depending on candidate’s qualifications, the title and job duties can vary from a dean position to an Assistant Principal role.

The Dean of Student Life manages the code of conduct and behavior programs for the school and models how to establish strong, mutually respectful relationships with students and families. This position requires a visible presence in all areas of the school and is responsible for maintaining a safe and affirming environment for students in the school.

The Dean of Student Life’s essential duties and responsibilities are as follows:

Leadership

  • Assists the Principal in establishing and maintaining professional and cooperative working relationships with all members of the school community: parents, students, staff, neighbors, and supporters.
  • Supervises and oversees recess and lunch monitoring procedures and guidelines.
  • Supports student organizations, extra-curricular activities, school assemblies, and other activities outside of the classroom routines.
  • Promotes and maintains a positive and effective school climate by ensuring that all interactions with staff, students, parents, and the public at large are prompt, efficient helpful and friendly.
  • Sets expectations for consistent classroom management procedures for teachers and coaches and supports teachers in classroom management improvement.
  • Works with the Information Technology personnel and infrastructure to ensure safe, appropriate use of educational technology and monitors the use of enrolled school devices.

Discipline

  • Develops and maintains student discipline procedures following established guidelines in the school handbook.
  • Communicates and meets with parents regarding student conduct and supports teachers in parent conferences regarding discipline concerns.
  • Maintains student discipline and follows through with documentation.
  • Meets with students who have received disciplinary referrals in order to determine disciplinary and/or remediating actions.

Other Duties

  • Plans and implements safety drills including fire, severe weather, and internal security drills.
  • Appears routinely around the school and at many parent events.
  • Occasionally covers classes as an “emergency” substitute teacher.
  • Oversees and manages student and teacher technology usage ensuring that it aligns with the acceptable usage policy for internet and 1:1 devices.

Qualifications
The Dean of Students shall be a person who is well-organized, well-rounded, engaging, and who has the ability to interact joyfully with students, parents, and faculty. A relational ministry approach to all interactions with the school community is essential.

Additionally, strong candidates will possess:

  • A high aptitude for technology and managing a 1:1 student device environment.
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment and decision making.
  • Excellent problem-solving and negotiating skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree at minimum; master’s degree preferred.
  • Current teaching or administrative certification or the willingness and ability to pursue certification.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a classroom teacher, school administrator or support professional.
  • Demonstrated track record of success in teaching and leadership experience in a school setting.

While a conscientious effort has been made to include all duties and expectations of the Archdiocese of Washington elementary school teacher, the above is not all inclusive and the position’s duties may be expanded or modified at the discretion of the Principal.
