JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT SERVICES

Immediate Supervisor: Chief Development Officer

Supervises: Philanthropy Data Manager, Grant Manager, Donor Coordinator

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The St. Louis Area Foodbank is adding a Director of Development Services to our dynamic team. This position oversees all development operations, including donor acquisition, annual giving campaigns, donor stewardship programs, grant management, data strategy and management, department budgeting, reporting, and analytics. He/she/they will serve as project manager for multiple fundraising campaigns, including potential future capital campaigns. The ideal candidate will be a strong leader of people, energetic, ambitious, goal-oriented, and creative, with a successful track record for building strong and productive relationships internally and externally.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Development Services is responsible for identifying and growing the people, programs, and processes needed to develop and maintain highly functional operations within the Development Department. He/she/they must be data-driven and capable of identifying and improving systems

This individual will work independently and collaboratively to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of day-to-day philanthropy operations, with a strong focus on continuous improvement. The ideal candidate must be an organized, critical-thinking leader who can implement systems and enhance processes while effectively delivering results within tight time constraints.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership and Strategy:

  • Collaborate with department and organizational leaders to develop strategic priorities aligned with annual initiatives that require funding and resources.
  • Develop and execute strong annual and mid-level giving campaigns, including monthly giving.
  • Collaborate and maintain cross-departmental synergies.
  • Develop, coach, and mentor team members to maximize their talents and position them for increased responsibility.
  • Works closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications to ensure messaging alignment and consistency in philanthropy-related communications.
  • Accurately project, track, and communicate fundraising progress toward budget goals.
  • Serves on the organization's Leadership Team.

Data Management:

  • Work closely with the data manager to oversee the best data management strategy to serve the organization's priorities and donor relationships.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of a robust donor pipeline.
  • Collaborate with other departments to streamline and improve data collection and sharing.
  • Oversee the creation of consistent and accurate philanthropy and donor reports and analytics.

Donor Development:

  • Develop, manage, and implement strategic giving programs with robust donor pipelines and dynamic journeys.
  • Ensure proper movement of donors between annual giving and major/planned giving programs.
  • Develop and implement donor stewardship and recognition programs.
  • Oversee the production process, budget, and schedule for mail and digital donor appeals, including vendor management.

Grant Management:

  • Oversee a talented grant writing team.
  • Maintain a small portfolio of grant funders.
  • Oversee effective prospecting, writing, editing, and reporting processes on grants.
  • Provide added capacity for writing, reviewing, and editing grant proposals as needed.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Maintain active affiliations with appropriate fundraising networks and organizations.
  • Attend meetings with the Board of Directors and interface with the Board's Development Committee and subcommittees.
  • Oversee tax credit programs.
  • Oversee compliance with philanthropy related to the United Way, Feeding America, and other key partnerships.
  • Ability to actively listen and build strong, compelling narratives.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 7 years of demonstrated success in institutional fundraising, business development, or marketing.
  • At least 5 years in a supervisory or managerial role
  • Prior budget responsibility experience.
  • Solid understanding of fund development principles & ethics.
  • Excellent digital/computer skills - solid knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of tools and experience using data management and CRM tools such as Raiser's Edge NXT.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to tailor messaging to varying audiences.
  • Strong time management skills - the ability to handle interruptions, meet deadlines, maintain focus on tasks, produce accurate work, and manage multiple projects with attention to detail.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screening and criminal background checks.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Monday - Friday onsite at the SLAFB facility and in the community as needed
  • However, flexibility will be granted as appropriate in accordance with the SLAFB's Remote Work/Working From Home Policy
  • Occasional weekend (Saturday/Sunday) or evening hours may be required
  • Meeting attendance may require overnight travel
