Summary Of ResponsibilitiesThe Communications Senior Specialist will use an anti-racist lens to interrupt systems of oppression while working to execute the district’s strategic communication plan. The Communications Senior Specialist will use racial consciousness as a storyteller and support in the exchange of information between St. Louis Park Public Schools and the public it serves. This role is pivotal in engaging stakeholders, promoting the district's mission, and enhancing our communication strategies with a strong emphasis on racial equity.
Duties And Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain cooperative and supportive relationships with employees, current students and families, prospective students and families, alumni and community members.
  • Foster an inclusive environment that respects and values diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Engage internal and external stakeholders by effectively communicating the district’s mission and goals, emphasizing our commitment to racial equity and inclusion.
  • Help tell the district’s story in a way that highlights our diversity and equity initiatives.
  • Photography-Photograph programs and events for publications, recognition, and system promotion. Edit photographs for optimal viewing. Maintain gallery and filing system of photos for use districtwide.
  • Plan, write, and produce scripts for professional videos (including pre- and post-production—filming, editing, sound mixing, graphic design, and compression) that communicate educational, inspiring, and engaging stories to increase awareness and support.
  • Manage the District website platform, make website updates, design webpage layout, and, train others on website platform as needed.
  • Manage and produce e-newsletters for staff, family, and other stakeholders.
  • Manage District social media strategies and official accounts.
  • Collaborate with school and district leaders to develop communications and marketing plans.
  • Assist with crisis communications support as needed.
  • Collaborate with multicultural liaisons and enrollment staff to support district marketing and communication priorities.
  • Demonstrate cultural awareness and sensitivity in all communications. Ensure all messaging is inclusive and reflects our commitment to diversity and equity.
  • Actively contribute to initiatives and conversations that promote racial equity within the district.
  • Assist in the planning, development, and implementation of the district’s strategic communication plan, ensuring it aligns with our racial equity goals.
  • Promote consistent communications, branding, and marketing standards across the district, schools, and programs.
  • Provide communications support, including:
    • Creates, proofreads, and reviews communications, reports, and other documents.
    • Provides administrative support for Director.
    • Completes general office duties.
    • Provides oversight to Communications Intern.
  • Coordinates with communications consultants and contractors as needed
  • Performs special projects as assigned or other comparable duties of a like or similar nature as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals, principles, approaches and techniques of graphic design and desktop publishing.
  • Knowledge of marketing principles and approaches.
  • Knowledge of communication principles, techniques and principles.
  • Knowledge of district administrative policies, procedures and organizational structure.
  • Knowledge of Courageous Conversation Protocol or other cultural competency principles
  • Knowledge of laws, rules, or mandates that pertain to areas of responsibilities.
  • Completion of an accredited communications program
  • Prior experience working in communications
  • Knowledge of news writing style and familiarity with a variety of communication platforms (print, Web, video, etc.)
  • Proficiency with video production
  • Proficiency in AP Style and excellent command of grammar, sentence structure and spelling
  • Familiarity with professional desktop applications such as Canva and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work independently and as a team
  • Ability to communicate to a variety of audiences, e.g. General public, elected officials, staff, and outside agencies
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Experience with websites
  • Proficiency in digital photography
  • Experience and proficiency in video production, video editing (Adobe Premier proficiency preferred), and graphic design and animation.
  • Proficient in social networking tools and comfortable using the Web to communicate ideas and generate dialogues

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s Degree Communications, journalism, public relations or closely related area.
  • Preferred work history in school communications
  • Preferred 5 years of professional level experience.
