Job Description

Position Title: ATHLETIC DIRECTOR FOR ST. MARY’S HIGH SCHOOL
Reports To: School President
FLSA: Full-time, twelve-month position, Exempt

St. Mary’s Parish is a vibrant Catholic congregation located in Historic Annapolis, Maryland serving over 5,000
families. St. Mary’s Parish includes St. Mary’s Church, St. John Neumann Mission Church, St. Mary’s Elementary
School and St. Mary’s High School.
Position Summary: The parish is seeking to fill the position of Athletic Director of the High School with
a dynamic leader to guide the co-educational interscholastic athletic program, which competes in the
MIAA and the IAAM, with 23 varsity sports, various intersquad teams and several hundred male and
female athletes.

Responsibilities:
In conjunction with the High School Principal, and reporting directly to the School President, the
Athletic Director shall:

  • Provide overall guidance and leadership for a comprehensive and successful
interscholastic program.
  • Be committed to continuing excellence in athletics within the context of a strong
academic program and a clear Catholic identity and faith-centered environment.
  • Supervise all members of the athletic department (contractual employees and
volunteers), including shared responsibility for hiring, discipling or dismissing, and full
responsibility for training, mentoring and evaluating coaches and athletic staff.
  • Prepare, submit and monitor an annual operating budget for the athletic department to
include salaries, travel, officials, field rentals, equipment, supplies and administrative
expenses.
  • Oversee the scheduling of games, transportation and officials.
  • Supervise high school athletic contests and act as host to officials and visiting schools.
  • Work with the High School Principal and School President to encourage collaboration

and community between the two units (Elementary and High School) of St. Mary’s
School, while understanding and communicating the role of athletics in promoting the
school, enhancing enrollment and inspiring school spirit.

  • Collaborate with coaches and the Admissions and Development Offices to recruit
student athletes, develop alumni events, community relationships, and fundraising
opportunities.
  • Mediate the resolution of problems, issues, and concerns that may arise between
coaches, students and parents and work collaboratively with the High School

Administration in regards to disciplinary issues involving students both on and off the
field.

  • Effectively communicate with parents and other constituents in order to clearly
articulate the role of athletics in advancing the mission, philosophy and educational
goals of the Parish and School in public speaking and other means.
  • Embrace the vital role of athletics in the promotion of St. Mary’s by overseeing media
coverage of athletic events, social media, live streaming of games and
photography/videography and website maintenance with special attention to the
protection of St. Mary’s student-athletes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission of Catholic education.
  • Experience as a high school or intercollegiate head coach, with demonstrable

competence in recruiting, leadership and comprehension and use of modern technology
and social media for promotion of athletic programs.

  • Coaching/Teaching experience in a Catholic school (high school level preferred).
  • Administrative/Leadership experience in a high school or college (i.e., Athletic Director,

Assistant Athletic Director, Coaching Mentor, etc.).
