St Peter Catholic Church Kansas City is Hiring a Director of Youth Ministry Full-Time Near Kansas, MO

Description

Responsible for developing a parish based pastoral ministry with youth. Reaches out to all youth in the community, provides for formal catechesis, invites and enables youth to serve others. Develops close communication with and mutual support from families of youth and collaborates with other community and parish youth organizations.

Responsible for coordinating a specific segment of a total youth ministry program. The Youth Minister I may supervise volunteers. This classification may be filled by those training for the Youth Ministry field. It requires some related training and experience.

Requirements

St Peter’s Catholic Church, in Kansas City, MO (Brookside), is seeking to hire a Director of Youth Ministry. The candidate applying should be a highly motivated, independent, self-starter who has a pioneer spirit and thinks outside of the box. They have the skills and gifts which make them capable of building a program for 6-12 graders from the ground up.

This position is uniquely set up so that in addition to “normal” youth ministry, the youth minister will have the opportunity to form 6th through 8th graders in the classroom at St. Peter’s School. This intentional structure allows the youth minister to have important face time with students and use this as platform for recruiting and building up the youth ministry outside of the school boundaries. The person who gets this position will help the school and the church function as one unit as they cohesively design a system of formation and discipleship where both play an important role and are not working against the other, as is often seen in certain Catholic Church/Parish dynamics.

Part of the reason for this dual pronged approach is because the Diocese of KC MO has moved confirmation from high school to 6th grade. Moving forward, we believe it is important that the language and strategy between the school and the parish be unified in its mission to help kids discern their confirmation. The best way to achieve this is through one person overseeing the whole process.

This position is new to the school and the church; you will have the unique opportunity to envision and create a ministry from the ground up and set the tone for the future.

Here are some questions that might be helpful as you discern whether you should apply for this position.

  • Are you able to design a comprehensive plan for youth ministry from A to Z that is contextualized especially to the St Peter’s community…. that focuses on conversion, discipleship, and catechesis?
  • Are you able to understand current social influences on youth and identify the major obstacles that get in the way of deeper conversion?
  • Are you able to persuasively articulate the Catholic faith so that youth both understand and buy-in to our faith (ages 11-18)?
  • Are you charismatic? That is, does it come natural for you to be able to attract, invite, recruit and build rapport with teens and lead them in discipleship?
  • Do you have the ability to identify, recruit, and train a team of adult and older youth volunteers?
  • Are you a capable administrator who can schedule, plan, organize, and implement retreats and events effectively?
  • Are you able to listen and clearly communicate to parents of teens who have a wide spectrum of beliefs, not necessarily in line with Catholic doctrine and morality?
  • Even though you should have a pioneer spirit, are you able to work on a team, be highly collaborative, and FLEXIBLE?
  • Can you manage and teach in a classroom setting?

Candidates who will be considered

  • Are confirmed and practicing Catholic
  • Participate in the Sacraments regularly.
  • Intellectually assent to Catholic Doctrine/Dogma and the Moral teachings of the church as laid out in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
  • Has an active and habitual prayer life that guides their way of life

Note: All employees are required to consent to a background check, commit to our Code of Conduct policy, and complete online and in-person training prior to hire.
