Essential Functions:

The ideal candidate will share Madera Community College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. For the 2020/2021 Academic Year, we currently enroll over 7,100 students in which 65% identify as Latinx, 9% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 3% as Black/African American, 18% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 3% as multiracial. Madera Community College is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.
Under the direction of the Dean of Instruction for STEM and CTE, providing instruction in Hospitality, Tourism, Culinary Arts and Retail (HOTCAR) on the Madera Community College campus at Madera and Oakhurst, and at off-site community campus locations, the instructor will be responsible for:
  • Serving as the Program Coordinator and Lead faculty for HOTCAR program;
  • Developing credit, non-credit and not-for credit programs to meet the workforce needs in Hospitality, Tourism, Culinary Arts, Retail Trade;
  • Teaching both lecture and laboratory classes in one or more of the above areas;
  • Building connections with local and regional industry and adult education partners, organize industry advisory board and work with various stakeholders as a lead for the HOTCAR program;
  • Evaluating adjunct instructors, and collecting data on student learning outcomes;
  • Curriculum and program development and/or revision, including program review and the development and assessment of student learning outcomes for courses and programs to improve student learning;
  • Participating in the accreditation process;
  • Collaborating with discipline faculty and across the college to implement guided pathways concepts in order to promote student success and completion;
  • Communicating effectively with students and staff and maintaining effective working relationships;
  • Participating in appropriate professional meetings and workshops;
  • Developing classroom presentations using multimedia tools;
  • Participating in student recruiting activities;
  • Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
  • Teaching assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus and large group instruction classes as needed; and
  • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.
Minimum Qualifications:
All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom; AND
  • Bachelors degree AND two years of closely related experience; OR
  • Associates degree AND six years of closely related experience; OR
  • A valid California Community College Credential; OR
  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Related work and professional experience;
  • Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, including disabled students;
  • Masters degree in any of the related disciplines relevant to this position;
  • Experience teaching at the post-secondary level;
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize innovative teaching practices, including participatory and critical thinking methodologies;
  • Understanding of small college environment;
  • Demonstrated interest in and ability to incorporate technology in the teaching/learning process;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently;
  • Strong social and emotional interpersonal skills;
  • Evidence of involvement in diverse aspects of hospitality operations;
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems or teaching Distance Learning courses;
  • Evidence of teaching or training in Hospitality Management;
  • Food Safety Manager Certification from an ANSI accredited organization;
  • Evidence of experience within the Culinary Industry;
  • Evidence of hands-on experience in commercial/industrial kitchens (e.g. hotels, fine-dining restaurant);
  • Evidence of hands-on cooking and supervisory experience;
  • Demonstrated desire to teach culinary arts, and baking & pastry;
  • Knowledge and experience in the development and assessment of student learning outcomes;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
  • Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.
Conditions of Employment:
177 duty days per year
Salary and Benefits:
Starting annual salary is $60,678 - $91,350 based on education and experience. An annual doctoral stipend of $2,270 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS).
Selection Procedure:
Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.
From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview.
The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the "recommended candidates". These candidates will be forwarded to theVice Presidentand College President for final interviews.
A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.

Madera Community College at Oakhurst is a satellite campus of Madera Community College. It is located just 20 minutes from the South entrance to Yosemite National Park and just minutes away from the Sierra National Forest. The campus provides opportunity and access to higher education for a geographically isolated population in Eastern Madera County. The campus currently serves Oakhurst, Mariposa County, Coarsegold, North Fork and the surrounding communities with over 75 courses in a variety of study areas. The center is slated to open a new permanent campus in Fall 2021.

Community College District in the Central Valley which includes Fresno, Madera, Kings and parts of Tulare counties. We have a student enrollment of about 35,000. The district has two fully accredited colleges: Fresno City College and Reedley College with college centers in Madera, Oakhurst and the Clovis area.
