State of Alaska is Hiring a National Digital Newspaper Coordinator Near Juneau, AK

Please note: The salary listed above will increase effective July 1, 2024 in accordance with the bargaining unit contract. Updated salary amounts will be provided at the time of interview.
What You Will Be Doing
Working with a small, skilled, and fun team, you’ll help make historical Alaskan newspapers accessible to researchers and the general public through the Chronicling America website at the Library of Congress. You’ll be responsible for day-to-day technical production work of the program such as liaising with staff, vendors, and the Library of Congress contact; creating metadata according to provided standards; reviewing batches of enhanced images; tracking the moving parts of the project closely; and creating outreach for the Digital Newspaper Project. You will collaborate on selecting newspaper titles by performing copyright research and working with the Newspaper Title Advisory Committee. This position is grant-funded for approximately two years with anticipated extension approval.
PLEASE NOTE: The incumbent may be required to travel within or outside of the state, generally no more than once or twice per year. This position may require lifting and moving up to 30 pounds.
Mission and Culture
The Department of Education and Early Development's Alaska State Library collects, organizes, preserves, and makes accessible materials that document the history of Alaska for the benefit of all Alaskans. We strive to ensure a variety of materials, from photographs to manuscripts, territorial records to periodicals, books, newspapers, and maps relating to Alaska’s history are available for research and review. As part of this work, the Alaska State Library was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities and Library of Congress grant to digitally preserve and provide free access to historical Alaskan newspapers in a searchable online database.

The Working Environment You Can Expect
This position is located in the Andrew P. Kashevaroff Building with dedicated parking and easy access to all of the amenities of downtown Juneau, including an onsite café. We share a large and comfortable open office and processing space with the Alaska State Archives and the building with the Alaska State Museum. With beautiful views of the mountains and the Gastineau Channel, lovely art, and competitive rubber chicken shooting events to get the energy going, we take our work, but not ourselves, very seriously.
