State of Alaska is Hiring a Public Health Nurse 1/2 Near Juneau, AK
What you will be doing:
Come work with us in the Juneau Public Health Clinic. We are looking for someone interested in kickstarting their nursing career in a public health setting. This position is a Public Health Nurse 1/2 flex, with the opportunity to expand and grow upon education advancement.

Here is a summary of the different levels of the position:
Public Health Nurse (PHN) 1: An entry-level to the specialty of comprehensive PHN practice providing individual/family, community, and systems-based public health nursing services. The PHN 1 works under the supervision of a Team Leader (PHN 3), as well as the direction of the Nurse Manager (PHN 4). The PHN 1 learns to work in partnership with individuals, communities, groups, organizations, and systems on the core functions and essential services.
Public Health Nurse (PHN) 2: Competent in blending knowledge, skills, and abilities from nursing and public health sciences to promote and preserve the health of Alaskans. Under the supervision and direction of the Team Leader (PHN 3) and the direction of the Nurse Manager (PHN 4), PHN 2 is fully competent to work independently in providing comprehensive individual/family, community, and systems-based PHN services. The PHN 2 works in partnership with individuals, communities, groups, organizations, and systems on the core functions and essential services.

Minimum Qualifications
PG03A1 – Public Health Nurse 1
Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Alaska;
AND
Current acceptance and enrollment in a Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science (RN-to-BSN) bridge program from an accredited college or university.
PG03A2 – Public Health Nurse 2
Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska;
AND
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university or Direct Entry Master of Science (MSN) in Nursing from an accredited college or university.
Special Notes:
Candidates not currently licensed by the State of Alaska, who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Alaska and requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities, may apply for vacancies in this job class. Applicants qualifying under this option may receive a conditional job offer; however, proof of RN licensure will be required prior to appointment and reporting for duty.
Candidates not actively enrolled, but who can provide proof of acceptance into an accredited Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-to-BSN) bridge program, may apply for vacancies in the Public Health Nurse 1 job class. Continued employment of the successful candidate is contingent upon active enrollment and attendance in the program commencing within six months of initial hire.
Successful performance of this work requires knowledge of principles and concepts of professional nursing, public and community health, and health care systems typically acquired through a course of study resulting in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Direct Entry Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). Continued employment and advancement from Public Health Nurse I to Public Health Nurse 2 is contingent upon maintaining active enrollment, in good academic standing, and successful completion of an accredited Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-to-BSN) bridge program within twenty-four months of initial hire, including time devoted to completing the enrollment process.
“Training” and “education” are synonyms for the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through instruction. It includes instruction through formal and informal methods (such as classroom, on-line, self-study, and on-the-job), from accredited and unaccredited sources, and long-duration (such as a post-secondary degree) and short-duration (such as a seminar) programs.
“Professional experience” means work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the power or right to decide or act according to one's own judgment.
“Progressively responsible” means indicating growth and/or advancement in complexity, difficulty, or level of responsibility.
Additional Required Information
At the time of the interview, please provide the following:
- A copy of their current Registered Nurse License (from any state)
- Three (3) professional references whom we may contact by phone, one (1) of whom must be your current or most recent supervisor, if not already provided in the application.
- A copy of academic transcripts (unofficial are okay; please ensure that the institution name/URL is listed on the transcripts) is used to verify that you meet the minimum qualifications.
- Proof of Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap), Mumps, Measles, Rubella (MMR), and Varicella immunizations.
- Proof of Hepatitis B (immunity or a signed declination statement)
- Annual influenza vaccination or a signed declination statement.
- Proof of tuberculosis screening within the past 12 months.
- A copy of your current driver’s license.
- A copy of your current Alaska Registered Nurse license.
FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the 1 or 2 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. The position's level will determine the starting salary. If filled at Level 1, promotion to the Level 2 will only occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class and final approval by supervisor.
