Description Of JobOur Life Safety Services and Environmental, Health and Safety to assure the health and safety of AHEC staff, students, and visitors and protection of the land, air, and waters, as outlined in the AHEC mission statement. This unit is responsible for maintaining local, state and federal compliance requirements associated with fire, life, and environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) rules, regulations, codes and standards. This unit is responsible for the following: operates, maintains, repairs, and installs campus fire alarm and suppression, security and critical alarm equipment in all buildings at the Auraria Higher Education Center; properly collects, stores, and disposes of the hazardous chemical, biological, and electronic waste streams across campus; assists in campus recycling programs; trains AHEC staff on safe work practices; identify and corrects workplace safety hazards, maintains safety equipment and personal protective equipment; and coordinates laboratory safety practice's with institutional programs.
Our Environmental Protection Specialist II is responsible for the following duties:
Waste Management:
  • Develops, implements, and administers programs for proper documentation, collection, inventory, storage, and disposal of regulated hazardous waste generated by AHEC and CCD, per all local, state, and federal rules and regulations. Coordinates waste shipments with the Metro and CU Denver EH&S Specialists (they manage their own hazardous waste).
  • Collects and arranges for disposal of campus biological waste from MSU Denver, CCD, and AHEC. Coordinates with CU Denver for biowaste vendor services and disposal.
  • Trains AHEC staff and assists CCD with training, as needed on proper waste disposal procedures.
  • Administers program for campus electronic waste, universal waste, paint waste and used tire recycling. Receives some assistance from other AHEC shops to help collect and manage these waste streams. Responsible for training support staff on any associated regulatory parameters and best work practices.
Hazardous Materials Management:
  • Develops and administers the AHEC chemical inventory and hazardous materials program for all AHEC spaces.
  • Provides chemical inventory database support services and training for institutional spaces.
  • Identify and manage Department of Homeland Security chemicals of concern.
  • Utilize reporting features of the chemical inventory system to determine Denver Fire Department code compliance related to flammable storage and Hazardous Materials Information System (HMIS) requirements.
  • Generate reports of chemicals stored on Auraria campus for fire department use during a response.
  • Manage Safety Data Sheets and assist with Hazard Communication for AHEC operations and spaces.
  • Assist with building surveys for asbestos containing materials (ACM) and other hazardous building materials (mold, lead, etc.).
  • Assist is management, tracking, and database building of known areas of ACM and other hazards in AHEC buildings.
Information Database And Life Safety Equipment Management:
  • Provides data base management functions and supports the inspection compliance aspects for the EH&S Department for the tracking and monitoring of regulated facility equipment (i.e. SPCC regulated containers), pH probes, AEDs, fire extinguishers, emergency showers, and eyewash stations via databases and/or building automation systems.
  • Tracks EH&S department safety and monitoring equipment, researches instrument maintenance requirements, and implements and manages calibration schedules.
  • Interacts with AHEC projects to capture newly installed equipment tracked via EH&S database systems.
Industrial Hygiene:
  • Supports and participates in all AHEC Safety Committees, Laboratory Safety Committees, and EH&S training events.
  • Assists in providing campus interpretation of environmental, health, and safety rules and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (i.e. snow removal)

  • Six (6) years directly related work experience in EH&S and Life Safety programs. The experience must clearly demonstrate the oversight of environmental compliance and experience in one or more of the following disciplines: Hazardous Material, Occupational Safety and/or Industrial Hygiene, Emergency Preparedness, or Fire and Life Safety.
Substitutions:
  • A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an EH&S Safety programs equal to six (6) years.
