Your Specific Responsibilities:

The Florida Department of Health, Division of Medical Quality Assurance (MQA) serves the public by licensing qualified health care providers, enforcing standards among licensees and facilities, and informing licensees and the public on matters related to providing safe health care to Floridians. The Bureau of Health Care Practitioner Regulation is specifically responsible for the policy making and programmatic activities related to licensure of health care practitioners and regulated facilities in the state of Florida. The Florida Board of Nursing is the largest of seven offices in the Bureau. 

The incumbent in this position will make an immediate and meaningful impact in the lives of Floridians. They perform duties that guarantee qualified health care professionals licensed or applying to be licensed under the Florida Board of Nursing (CNAs, LPNs, RNs, and/or APRNs) can work in the state of Florida and provide Floridians the health care they need to lead healthier lives. The incumbent will also support those currently working in health care professions who are so critical in any public health emergency through increasing the number of qualified health care professionals who can practice in the state.

The incumbent will work in a professional, administrative setting and perform duties similar to school registrars, medical records, billing, or coding specialists; customer service representatives, executive or administrative assistants, data entry clerks, or other positions who ensure compliance with regulations or rules and provide professional assistance to members of the public. Knowledge or experience in nursing or any health-related field or relevant Florida statutes is helpful, but not required.

Your duties and responsibilities may include:

  • Evaluates applications and supporting documents and determines eligibility for individuals applying for licensure under the Board of Nursing (CNA, LPN, RN, and/or APRN) within expected timeframes.
  • Corresponds in writing to applicants in conjunction with processing their application to notify them of deficiencies and application statuses, as well as to clarify concerns, obtain additional information, and/or explain relevant statutes or applicable board rules.
  • Responds directly and in a timely fashion via writing or over the phone to public inquiries on licensure status, issues, and requirements; and technical issues regarding the licensure process for assigned professions/licensure applications and recommends a resolution.
  • Establishes and maintains a paper and/or electronic filing system for specific professions, which includes applications, transcripts, correspondence, license and employment verifications, and other supporting documentation.
  • Enters and maintains accurate data and uploads documentation on licensees and the status of applications and licensure in relevant electronic databases.
  • Communicates with supervisors on special licensure issues and any applicants whose credentials may warrant additional review or a personal appearance before any committee of the Board.
  • Summarizes and prepares application files and supporting documentation for review by Board members.
  • Performs other related work as required to maintain efficiency within the Board, including, but not limited to, responding promptly to the needs of licensees, applicants, consumers, the legislature, and other areas of the Department of Health; and assisting with office phone coverage.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement and initiative in carrying out assignments.
  • Ability to learn, understand, and apply Florida Statutes, rules, policies, and procedures for licensing.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work activities to meet strict deadlines.
  • Ability to concentrate, provide great attention to detail, and maintain a pre-approved work schedule.
  • Ability to work independently and establish and maintain dependable, effective working relationships with others.
  • Knowledge and proficiency of Microsoft Office software.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in using Windows-based computers.
  • Ability to learn and utilize job-specific software such as LEIDS and AxiomPro and office equipment such as phones, fax machines, scanners, and copiers.

Qualifications:

Preference will be given to those who meet the following minimum requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent AND 2 years’ experience that includes data entry, document preparation, computer software use, evaluating legal documents or evaluating for compliance with regulations, customer service, or handling sensitive information.
  • College education can substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
