About the Commission:

The Florida Commission on Human Relations is the state agency charged with enforcing the state’s civil rights laws and serves as a resource on human relations for the people of Florida. It is against Florida law to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, marital status or familial status. The Commission investigates complaints of discrimination in the areas of employment, housing, public accommodations, and state employee whistle-blower retaliation.

The Commission is responsible for promoting fair treatment, equal opportunity, and mutual respect among members of all economic, social, racial, religious, and ethnic groups and works to eliminate discrimination against groups and their members.

What Will I be Doing?

The successful candidate in this position serves as the Commission’s Receptionist. In this highly responsible position, and due to the duties, regular attendance is required. Specific job duties include:

  • Answers telephone, greets, and announces visitors.
  • Logs, opens, and date stamps incoming hand delivered packages, complaint charge forms, etc. received at the front desk.
  • Performs searches in the Commission’s Case Management System (ActionStep) to identify the correct location for hand delivered packages, complaint charge forms, etc. to be properly distributed to appropriate personnel
  • Regularly checks the Commission’s main email account to retrieve all incoming emails, complaints, and other relevant material pertaining to the Commission. Date stamps and distributes emails to the appropriate persons/areas.
  • Regularly checks/retrieves the Commission’s main voicemail messages and promptly returns the calls or forwards the messages to the proper persons.
  • Provides assistance to staff as needed.

Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent and two years of secretarial or clerical work experience.
  • College education from an accredited institution can substitute at the rate of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours for each year of the required work experience.
  • Vocational/technical training in the area of secretarial science or office/business studies can substitute at the rate of 720 classroom hours for each year of the required work experience.

Preferences

Preference will be given to those applicants that possess a strong customer service background and that are bilingual, fluent in both English and Spanish.

Therefore, the selected candidate must successfully pass a level two background screening (which includes fingerprinting) as a condition of employment. Applicants being considered for employment will be required to submit to a fingerprint-based background investigation, which will include a check of the criminal history records of the FBI.
