Position Overview

The Division of Mental Health is seeking to hire a Security Officer Lieutenant for the Elgin Mental Health Center located in Elgin, Illinois to serve as watch commander on an assigned shift in Facility Security Services.

Serves as working supervisor. Provides leadership, directs, and supervises lower security staff engaged in the provision of safety and protection services for persons and property.

Provides documentation of incidents for facility records according to policies and procedures and accreditations standards.

Conducts security needs studies. Advises and monitors staff during the handling of problem incidents and monitors the preparation of incident reports and documentation.

Job Responsibilities

  • Serves as watch commander on an assigned shift in Facility Security Services of Elgin Mental Health Center.
  • Serves as working supervisor.
  • Conducts security needs studies for a respective shift.
  • Advises and monitors staff during the handling of problem incidents and monitors the preparation of incident reports and documentation.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school.
  • Requires two (2) years’ experience in safety and protection service or in a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of professional experience working with security requirements and regulations for a public or private organization.
  • Five (5) years of professional experience working with emergency response procedures including fire safety and controls for a public or private organization.
  • Five (5) years of professional experience in the use of security enforcement practices and techniques and supervisory practices.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience providing leadership, directing, and supervising staff for a public or private organization.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience providing initial responses to security breaches and safety hazards.
  • Two (2) years of experience communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires the ability to walk and stand for a significant period of time, including stooping, bending and lifting.
  • Requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Requires the ability to acquire and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires the ability to work after business hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Requires the ability to participate in restraint interventions that require the physical hold of a patient.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
