Job DescriptionOnly applicants who meet the Minimum Qualification Requirements and meet all selective requirements (listed below) will be placed on the eligible list.The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services’ (Iowa HHS) Division of Public Health, Bureau of Environmental and Local Public Health is seeking a Environmental Epidemiologist.SummaryThe Bureau of Environmental and Local Public Health seeks to hire an Environmental Epidemiologist. Under the direct supervision of the Environmental Health Section Supervisor, this position will serve as a data manager and provide epidemiological analysis of reportable environmental poisonings and conditions and data related to the Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) program. Duties include data tracking, statistical analysis, and reporting on environmental health related program performance measures and comparing state and national benchmarks for state environmental health program performance across all age groups and social/economic determinants.
ResponsibilitiesThe position works in collaboration with other environmental epidemiologists and program teams within the Bureau of Environmental and Local Public Health by performing advanced professional level or lead work in collecting, compiling, analyzing and reporting statistical data. Collaborates with other program staff to develop and implement the Environmental Public Health Tracking grant annual work plan.
Leads strategy development for Environmental Public Health Tracking grant program activities related to network development. Identifies objectives, timelines, potential partners and budget allocation. Coordinate with Department or State Information Management staff to maintain the technical infrastructure of the Iowa Public Health Tracking portal. Evaluate informatics needs and conduct a gap analysis to address barriers to the effective use of data for environmental public health decision making. Represent IDPH on the EPHT program's Standards and Network Development national work-group, and participate on EPHT national content work-group teams.
Develop and coordinate routine descriptive analysis of Tracking data to evaluate quality and completeness of data; to examine state and local environmental public health issues; or to generate information for other state and local programs, state and local decision makers, and the general public. Develop and coordinate routine analyses using Tracking data for the discovery of spatial, temporal, and demographic patterns of diseases, exposures, or environmental hazards; the timely identification of unusual events signaling the need for further investigation; or the non-research purposes of analyzing or linking health, exposure, and hazard data to help provide new insights or solutions to environmental health issues. Perform advanced statistical analysis of EPHT and other environmental health related data. Participate in department data work-groups, CDC site visits, and state and national trainings and workshops. Disseminate data and evaluation results to internal and external stakeholders and use results to recommend specific action and/or new policies, procedures, and standards for program quality improvement and provide technical assistance on data related issues.

Selectives185 Epidemiology6 months experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both in epidemiology, which involves:
  • The surveillance for respiratory diseases, vector-born diseases, enteric diseases, antimicrobial-resistant agents, or other infectious or non-infectious diseases
  • The development of protocols and procedures for data collection and analysis, ongoing analysis of data using a variety of databases and statistical analysis programs
  • The development and dissemination of written reports, graphs, tables, etc.
OR
968 Statistics20 semester hours in post-high school coursework in statistics.
AND
535 Public Health6 months experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both related to improving, maintaining, and protecting the general condition of health within society, either on a personal, institutional, organizational, or community basis. Experience may be gained from direct provision of health care or from other ancillary programs and support mechanisms such as government public health departments.
Minimum Qualification RequirementsApplicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a graduate degree in public health with at least two courses related to the principles and practice of epidemiology.
  • All of the following (a and b):
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a non-public health graduate degree with at least two courses related to the principles and practice of epidemiology; and
  • Three years of experience in applied epidemiology in an infectious, noninfectious, or chronic diseases; environmental poisonings or conditions; injury prevention; or a substance misuse related epidemiology program.
