Job Description:
The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine institutions statewide, which house approximately 5,200 inmates. The department's focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). Additional $3/hour facility differential for hours worked.
DUTIES:
This position is stationed at the Omaha Correctional Center but will also be responsible for Community Corrections Center - Omaha and the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility. Under general supervision, conducts safety inspections and education programs; enforces State safety laws, rules, and regulations, and recommends corrective courses of action for compliance with safety laws, rules, and regulations; performs related work as required. Develops, implements, and maintains facility and building site safety program. Inspects all buildings to ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA, NEC, AVA, USDA, FDA, DHS, and Nebraska Fire Codes. The development, coordination, and updating of procedures to implement the safety program. These procedures shall specifically address the safety provisions of current ACA standards/expected practices and other federal, state, and local rules and regulations applicable to their facility. Accomplishing and documenting a thorough and comprehensive monthly fire, health, and safety inspection of all areas of the facility. Schedule and coordinate annual facility fire inspections (fire marshal or city fire department, as appropriate). Establishing a program of weekly fire, safety, and health inspections of all areas of the facility by designated and qualified team members. Developing a system to ensure written documentation of deficiencies/discrepancies noted on weekly and monthly inspections. Maintaining documentation of all safety and health inspections, safety training, evacuation training and fire drills conducted in their facility. Establishing procedures to ensure notification and involvement of the facility safety specialist and appropriate supervisory team member in the investigation and reporting of all incidents of work-related injury accidents and illnesses. Establish a safety committee that will be made up of an equal number of representatives in management and bargaining unit team members.
Requirements / Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications : Associates degree or equivalent vocational education in construction, industrial engineering, HVAC, welding, or other building trade. Experience in building maintenance, a mechanical trade, or performing safety inspections, investigations or training may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis as determined appropriate by the agency.
Other : Must have valid driver's license. Applicant must pass a criminal background check. Applicants accepting the job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.
Knowledge, skills & abilities
Knowledge of: training development and techniques; principles and techniques of accident prevention; the application of industrial safety devices; federal, state and local safety laws, rules and regulations; basic safety courses; fire codes and fire prevention methods, mechanical, electrical, and chemical safety; inspection procedures; equipment functions and operations.
Ability to: analyze data and recommend corrective action; instruct classes and present information; communicate orally and in writing at all levels; interpret laws, rules and regulations.
