Job Description:
Do you have professional certification in interpreting? Are you wanting to make a difference? The Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is seeking a Part Time Staff Interpreter. As a Staff Interpreter, under limited supervision, the candidate will coordinate and provide communication access services and sign language interpreter to teammates in the agency and individuals in the community when needed. Incumbents receive supervision from Management.
This position is offered for the Omaha OR Lincoln office.

Job Duties: Provide licensed sign language interpreting services during phone calls, video calls, meetings, and other business conversations to provide effective communication access for members of the agency staff and other stakeholders. Provide external, billable sign language interpreting services as requested/needed for outside agencies and clients in a variety of settings, if approved by the Executive Director. Provide consumers, service providers and the community with information about becoming a licensed sign language interpreter and advocacy on the role and function of a sign language interpreter to promote public awareness. Work on special projects as needed/requested. Collaborate on projects as needed/requested. Other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification.
Requirements / Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Post-high school coursework, a two year interpreter training program or equivalent, QAST or RID certification, plus sign language interpreting experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Candidate must hold and hold RID National Certification. At least 5 years of interpreting experience in a variety of professional settings. Strong sign to voice skills required. Candidate must be proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English. Interpreting is a complex process that requires knowledge of linguistics in both languages and the cognitive and technical skills necessary to interpret effectively. * Knowledge of Deaf culture. The ability to interpret for Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing employees that are engaged in specialized meetings in a variety of professional settings. Some examples include, state agencies, state legislature, performance reviews, staff meetings, Board meetings, and agency community events.
Other: Occasional travel is a part of this position. Will include occasional overnight stays when traveling out of town. Must have good intrapersonal skills and able to work with a variety of clients. Regular and reliable attendance is required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: The role and function of an interpreter, interpreter ethics and related issues; the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) code of professional conduct (CPC) to avoid personal interference or misuse of confidential information; the issues and cultures of the deaf sufficient to inform or instruct hearing persons regarding the needs of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community; federal and state regulations regarding required services for people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing; current interpreter trends. Ability to: interpret program policies and procedures and to carry out those policies; maintain confidentiality regarding interpreting assignments; make decisions and work independently; plan, organize and provide training for sign language interpreters.
