The Position
Public Information Officers manage the public relations and information program for an agency on a statewide basis; write media releases, newsletters, and informational brochures; produce audiovisual presentations and take photographs.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.
Under general supervision of the Deputy Director of the Department of Health and Human Services, the Public Information Officer 2 performs public relations and communications work in planning and organizing media relations, communication programs and responding to public records requests. The incumbent will work with Public Information Officers housed within the Department's 5 Divisions, coordinating agency-wide messaging and outreach. The incumbent will have knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations. The incumbent will have the principles and techniques to plan, organize, and coordinate government public relations, communications, and media relations programs. Including techniques in preparing, producing, and disseminating information to the general public, news media, partner providers and the community, utilizing all major modes of communication. The incumbent will prepare and disseminate information to the press through a variety of communication media, including press releases, social media, photography, graphic arts, copy layout, and radio and television programming. Principles and techniques of establishing and maintaining good relations with news media and other public groups. To QualifyIn order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
QualificationsEducation and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in journalism, English, public or community relations, communications or closely related field and three years of professional experience in administering or directing a public information program including writing media releases and newsletters, preparing and presenting speeches and multimedia presentations, independent media contact, development of public relations strategies and journalistic writing; OR one year of experience as a Public Information Officer I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Notes The incumbent may be required to work a flexible shift, to possibly include some weekends. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. A valid drivers license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
