State of North Carolina is Hiring a Curator of Visitor Experiences Near Columbus, NC

This position is deemed eligible for hybrid telework under DNCR’s Telework Policy.
Recruitment Range: $33,272 - $47,121
This is a range. Selected candidate’s salary will be determined within this range 
based on qualifications, equity, and funding at the time of hire.

Primary Purpose of Position:
This position’s regular duty station is the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville.
 
The primary purpose of the Curator of Visitor Experiences is to manage the daily onsite operations, animal care, exhibits, and facilities for the NC Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville. Duties include guest services and the development, care, and maintenance of exhibits, living collections, and facilitated learning areas.
This position may supervise volunteers, interns, and AmeriCorps staff.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Determine layout for spaces and tabletop interactive activities for the Investigate Lab, Naturalist Center, Fossil Lab, and the Discovery Forest.
  • Create and facilitate educational programming for scheduled groups, including live animal programs.
  • Welcome and orient all museum visitors, including museum guidelines and rules.
  • Assist visitors with Museum activities, including the Backpack Program, Scavenger Hunts, and engaging in the Discovery Forest, Nature PlaySpace, and laboratory spaces.
  • Perform the daily feeding, cleaning, record keeping, and support activities associated with caring for the Whiteville Branch’s live animal collection.
  • Facilitate opening and closing of the branch location each day, ensuring that all areas are secure and ready for the public.
  • Assist with emergency and hurricane preparedness by assessing the Museum for hazards, including the preparation and placement of sandbags for flood prevention, and minor restoration duties following a severe weather event or facilities emergency.
 Position/Physical Requirements:
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:
  • Demonstrated experience creating and facilitating educational programming.
  • Demonstrated experience working with the public in a professional setting.
Management Prefers:
  • Demonstrated experience caring for live animals and using them in educational programs.
  • Demonstrated skill in exhibit design and production.
  • Demonstrated skill in evaluating security risks and addressing hazards.
  • Knowledge of basic facilities maintenance.
  • North Carolina Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.

Bachelor's degree in Art History, Biology, Botany, Conservation, Education, History or Zoology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of museum or related work

Section/Unit Description:
The Regional Network reaches underserved North Carolina communities and provides science education and natural history content across the state. The Regional Network is comprised of four branch facilities and the NC Science Museums Grant Program. These facilities include the Prairie Ridge Ecostation in Raleigh, as well as branches in Greenville, Grifton, and Whiteville, N.C. The NC Science Museums Grant Program provides annual operational funding, professional development, and exhibit support to over 50 nonprofit and local government science museums throughout North Carolina. The section champion’s the Museum’s mission and advances operational plans. It provides cross-sectional collaboration to support the network across the State and contribute to total quality management.
 
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville brings high quality science and nature programming to the communities of Southeastern North Carolina. Through the Museum’s building and exhibits, outdoor learning and exploration spaces, and educational and public programming, the Whiteville Branch helps to expand the reach of NCMNS's mission and vision across the state.
Division Description:
The State’s museum devoted to science and nature, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in central Raleigh is the largest institution of its kind in the Southeastern United States and, with over a million visitors a year, the state’s most visited museum. Its 300,000 square foot downtown campus is augmented by Prairie Ridge Ecostation and satellite facilities in Whiteville, Greenville, and Contentnea Creek. Together, they provide a variety of curriculum-focused classes onsite, offsite, outdoors, and online for pre-kindergarten through graduate students across the state.
 
As a museum of nature, we integrate the dual concepts of illumination and inspiration with the work we do and the many stories we tell. In a time of unprecedented environmental challenges, nothing could be more critical. This nexus of ideas makes us unique. Across three vibrant floors of laboratories and exhibitions, our Nature Research Center provides an unparalleled opportunity to see science in action by watching museum researchers studying the natural world in real time. In the Nature Exploration Center, exhibits and live animal displays reveal North Carolina’s rich natural habitats, wildlife, and geology from the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean.

We develop a variety of exhibits to share with institutions across North Carolina and support other museums by administering the North Carolina Science Museums Grant Program.
