The Office of Unemployment Insurance Operations (OUIO) administers Ohio's unemployment insurance program, which provides short-term income to unemployed workers who lose their jobs through no fault of their own. It reduces the hardship felt by families during periods of temporary unemployment and bolsters the local economies by maintaining the purchasing power of the unemployed worker. The BPC section works to prevent and detect fraud in unemployment claims. Staff also investigate and work to recover improper unemployment payments.

What You’ll Do

In this job, you will:

  • Review and obtain documentation from various sources to substantiate or refute allegations.
  • Interview claimants, employers, and witnesses by phone and in-person.
  • Provide customer assistance by responding to incoming calls, correspondence, and in-person services.
  • Adjudicate appeals as part of BPC investigation.
  • Determine validity of claims based on review of documentation and evidence provided.
  • Conduct trainings for staff on BPC procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Actual responsibilities will vary depending on daily needs and type of customer supported.

We are looking for people with these skills and abilities:

  • 24 months experience adjudicating and processing unemployment claims.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend documents in English.

  • Must be able to operate a personal computer with basic knowledge of Microsoft 365.

Challenges: You may interview uncooperative, hostile, or upset people.

Schedule: Standard workdays are Monday-Friday. Hours are 8am to 5 pm. Days are scheduled quarterly to provide in-person services.

Travel: You will travel for quarterly in-person customer service days. More travel for occasional meetings for training or other operational needs may be required

Qualifications


Option 1

  • 24 months experience as unemployment compensation examiner 2, 16752.
  • Must provide own transportation for travel & required automobile insurance coverage pursuant to Section 4509.51 of Revised Code.

Option 2

  • 24 months experience in interpreting & applying program eligibility &/or liability (e.g., unemployment compensation; workers compensation, human services or income tax law);
  • AND 6 months training or 6 months experience in developing correspondence;
  • AND 6 months training or 6 months experience in employee training & development;
  • AND 6 months training or 6 months experience in making presentations to groups;
  • AND 12 months training or 12 months experience in customer contact (i.e., telephone &/or face-to-face) for purposes of problem solving;
  • AND 6 months training or 6 months experience in operation of personal computer in a MS Windows environment;
  • Must provide own transportation for travel & required automobile insurance coverage pursuant to section 4509.51 of Revised Code.

Option 3

  • Equivalent of minimum class qualifications for employment noted above.

Pay Information

This position is in the State of Ohio’s E1 Pay Schedule, Pay Range 30. Unless required by legislation or union contract, starting salary will be the minimum salary of that pay range (step 1, currently $23.49 per hour). These ranges provide a standardized pathway for pay increases. With continued employment, new hires move to the next step in the range after 6 months and annually thereafter. Cost of Living Adjustments increase wages in these ranges each fiscal year. The current step progression wages are in the table below.

Telework Policy

ODJFS may require occasional in-person meetings for training or other operational needs. You will have access to ODJFS shared workspaces, if needed.
