State of South Carolina is Hiring a Law Enforcement Officer I (Temporary) Near Richland, SC

Midlands Technical College is a public, multi-campus, two-year public college serving the primary region of Richland, Lexington and Fairfield counties of South Carolina that offers a variety of associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates.   • Patrols assigned campuses to prevent crime and detect violations of law and college regulations. Seeks to prevent theft and damage to college property. Enforces parking rules and regulations, observes road and parking lot hazards, assists motorists, directs pedestrian and vehicular traffic, and reserves parking for special events and meetings on campus.
  • Responds to complaints, reports violations and requests assistance. Investigates incidents, gathers evidence, maintains crime scenes and pursues logical conclusions either of legal process or administrative procedure.
  • Coordinates with private contract security, assists in locking and unlocking buildings, classrooms, labs, and automobiles, assists in fire prevention and other safety hazards, and assists in locating students in an emergency. Investigates missing/stolen property, disturbances, and complaints.
  • Seeks out potential criminals and criminal activity on campus and submits findings in a written report to supervisor. Apprehends and arrests violators and testifies in court and other legal or administrative proceedings. Performs general police and public service functions such as maintaining order during emergencies, providing first aid, fire prevention and crisis intervention. 
  • Must assist and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies and other police officers. Maintains and develops a constructive image through positive contact with the college community. Performs other duties as required by supervisor.

This position is located on all MTC campuses in the Operations department.
Must possess a Class 1 Law Enforcement certification in accordance with 23-6-430 of the Code of South Carolina 1976, as amended. High school diploma and two (2) years’ experience in law enforcement.Must have and maintain a valid SC driver’s license and a working knowledge of SC laws, rules and regulations. Must be able to pass a law enforcement pre-employment polygraph. Must be 21 years of age. May be subject to dangerous and stressful situations on a daily basis. Must be able to work in extreme weather temperatures (hot/cold). Subject to emergency calls and additional scheduled work at any time and may be required to work on other campuses. Must possess skills to operate weapons and communications equipment. Must have the ability to investigate disturbances, incidents and violations, write reports, coordinate with law enforcement agencies, deal tactfully and effectively with students, faculty/staff and visitors. Must maintain certification with the SC Law Enforcement Academy by obtaining forty (40) credit training hours every three years and pass the state physical examination. Effective interpersonal and communication skills are key. Must be able to work shifts, including evenings and weekends. Must be able to lift 50 lbs unassisted and maintain the ability to physically perform the assigned duties.
