Job Responsibilities

Serves as the Assistant Commandant of the South Carolina Youth Challenge Academy (SCYCA). Works under the supervision of the Commandant of the SCYCA. Assists the Commandant in ensuring the accountability, supervision, health, welfare and safety of assigned cadets and cadre staff. Assists in planning, developing, implementing, and monitoring the Mission, Vision, Goals and Objectives of the SCYCA. Directly supervises and manages the Senior Team Leaders for each platoon of cadets, and manages all activities of the cadre leadership and cadets of the SCYCA. Responsible for the work schedule of Senior Team Leaders and Cadre Staff. Participates in the management of the academy; attends planning sessions, provides feedback to cadre staff, and encourages employee growth and development. Reviews program objectives to determine compatibility with agency's mission; assesses Operations Department activities and implements policy, procedure or rule changes. Ensures directives from the Commandant, Deputy Director, and/or Director are carried out and completed, and ensures Operations Department is following National Guard Bureau (NGB) guidelines and standards. Responsible for conducting a robust physical training program and maintaining good order and discipline. Counsels cadets and cadre staff on performance and other issues, reviews and/or conducts investigations into cadre/cadet misconduct, and oversees and monitors Cadet Disciplinary System. Tracks and maintains data required by NGB and the Director, and provides monthly Department reports to the Commandant and the Director. Assists in the planning, staffing, and implementation of special events. Maintains daily communications with the SCYCA Commandant, Deputy Director and Director. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements

A high school diploma and five years of honorable military service which included attainment of an E-6 or higher. Supervisory/Management experience.
Preferred Qualifications

A Bachelor's or Master's Degree in related fields of Business Management/Administration, Social Work, Education or Counseling, ten (10) years of honorable military service which included attainment of the rank of E-8 or higher, previous successful experience as a First Sergeant, and graduation from the U.S. Army Senior Leaders Course (SLC) or equivalent Officer or Senior Non-Commissioned Officer course, four (4) years of experience in program management/supervision, and two (2) years of experience working with at-risk youth.
Additional Comments

Must have a thorough understanding of adolescent behavior, leadership and managements skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to prioritize and organize tasks, and good computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of laws, regulations, policies and procedures relevant to the area of employment. Knowledge and experience in managing complex programs to include Administration, Budget/Finance, and Human Resources. Ability to create and achieve a strategic plan related to program improvement. Ability to effectively communicate and work with military and civilian officials. Individual may be required to work extended hours as required. Overnight and extended stays may be required to support ongoing operations, and during attendance at conferences, workshops, off-site meetings and seminars.
