The South Dakota Department of Transportation Watertown Area Office is looking for an eager and capable individual to support our mission to provide "Better Lives through Better Transportation." By joining our team, you will become part of that larger purpose to maintain and build our state's transportation system for all South Dakotans and those who travel through our state. The Watertown Area Office is looking for a motivated individual to help us fulfill this mission.
We have opportunities for you to work independently and in a team setting. We will provide training for the work you will do. The Watertown Area provides a great team environment, mentoring, and overall purpose with the people that care. Work assignments will allow you to work in a variety of environments from the office to the great outdoors. As a team member, you will also be given safety shirts, a jacket, and other related safety items and equipment. Also, you will be provided a state vehicle for use on the job.
This position performs technical engineering support and construction trade's related work. Duties may include, but are not limited to, inspecting portland cement concrete paving; collecting and testing portland cement concrete samples; inspecting and observing portland cement concrete plant inspections; collecting and testing samples for asphalt plant quality control/quality assurance; inspecting asphalt paving; monitoring grading operations; collecting and testing aggregate and soil samples; inspecting pipe materials and installation; inspecting erosion and sediment control; inspecting structures and materials; setting up and collecting survey data; inspecting temporary traffic control through and around work zones; and completing various records and reports.
A valid driver's license is required.
A typical 40-hour workweek, Monday through Friday, can be expected; although, hours may vary during construction activity including weekends.
Work assignments are frequently performed outside in all weather conditions and around highway traffic.

The total compensation of Hourly Wage State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Journey Transportation Technician is approximately $62,913.00 annually.
Licenses And CertificationsCertification in one or more materials testing areas and/or one or more inspection areas is required within the first year of employment. Further certification areas will be determined by the supervisor according to job responsibility and needs. Required certifications must be maintained for continued employment. Classes and training in the certification areas are provided through the Department of Transportation.
The Ideal Candidate Will HaveA 2-year technical degree in civil engineering technology, engineering/architectural drafting, or a vocational technical degree in a related field, a 4-year Construction Management degree, and/or 2-years experience in transportation related construction or surveying.
Knowledge Of
  • civil engineering techniques (preferred but not required);
  • various types of engineering survey equipment (preferred but not required).
