The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing comprehensive, professional, culturally, linguistically, and age-appropriate care in a correctional setting. This position will be responsible for diagnoses, conducting therapy, and prescribing medication for patients who have psychiatric disorders, medical organic brain disorders, or substance abuse problems.

Responsibilities will be, but not limited to:

* Provide psychiatric services, psychosocial and physical assessment of patients, treatment plans, and manage patient care;

* Work as a member of the multidisciplinary team, while also providing medical providers with consults for mental health issues as needed and collaborating with medical providers as needed;

* Establish diagnoses, order, and interpret studies, perform, and monitor therapeutic procedures, assess and/or manage follow-up care;

* Prescribe and regulate medications relative to the patient's health care needs;

* Record and document health appraisal data, in a timely and accurate manner, necessary to maintain and/or coordinate required services;

* Communicate findings of mental healthcare assessments, diagnostic tests, etc. to patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers in a timely manner and/or as determined by DOC policy and clinical standards;

* Develop, provide, and systematically re-evaluate the plan of treatment for patients;

* Make appropriate referrals for patients when appropriate services are not within the DOC Clinical Services scope of practice for Behavioral Health;

* Provide assessment, consultation, and brief intervention for psychological/psychiatric problems and/or disorders;

* Maintain documentation of patient encounters via progress notes, assessment/diagnostic information, and treatment planning as outlined in DOC policy and clinical standards;

* Maintain necessary NP registration/licensure as required by South Dakota state law;

* Know, understand, and ensure adherence to the organization's policy related to the patients' right for confidential care and HIPAA;

* Perform other tasks/duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Licenses and Certification:

* Applicant must be licensed to practice as a Certified Nurse Practitioner in the State of South Dakota as outlined by the appropriate regulating board.

* Certified by ANCC or ANA as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.

* Current and valid DEA licensure.

Required Competencies:

* ability to provide direct patient care to offenders;

* excellent written and verbal communication skills;

* excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders;

* ability to read and comprehend the English language;

* ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing;

* ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind.

Preferred Qualifications:

* experience providing medical care in a correctional environment;

* previous experience working as a PMHNP;

* experience managing mental health conditions as a mid-level provider.

Conditions of Employment:

The SD DOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. All job offers are contingent upon the successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen (UDS), and the candidate's ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Individuals selected for the position will have the opportunity to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) if desired. If OC spray is carried, the staff carrying OC spray will be required to have direct (level 1) exposure during the training program. Individuals selected for the position must successfully complete a written and practical self-defense exam and successfully complete CPR to AHA guidelines - this includes successful completion of the practical/hands on portion as well as the written exam. Selected individuals must possess the physical ability to successfully complete the practical self-defense exam, which involves the following:

* lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;

* stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled takedown;

* use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;

* withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;

* rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;

* get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions; Additionally, TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.

This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
