State of Vermont is Hiring an AOT Technician III - Traffic Investigator Near Berlin, VT

OverviewThe Traffic Operations team at the Agency of Transportation (AOT) is seeking a Technician to fill the role of Traffic Investigator on our team.
The Traffic Investigations Unit is responsible for performing a variety of Traffic Investigations including but not limited to: evaluation of existing traffic control devices (mainly signs and pavement markings), recommendation of proposed new traffic control devices, and review of project plans and work zones. Traffic Investigation also includes performing Engineering Studies on behalf of the Traffic Operations Engineer for Traffic Committee.
This position may eventually be assigned a region as a Regional Traffic Investigator. Regional boundaries will depend on team needs. Incumbent will mentor under one or more Regional Traffic Investigators for a period of time before being assigned a region. Official work duty station will be out of Berlin.
Telework and alternative work schedules may be available as outlined in the current State policy.
This position is currently limited service, funded through 09/30/2026, but it is possible this position will become permanent in the future.

Environmental FactorsDuties are generally performed in an office, laboratory, and field setting for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Class incumbents may be required to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, traverse rough, wooded, and steep terrain, travel in boats or work on structures above ground level. Duties may also require exposure to extreme weather conditions. Out of state travel may be required.
Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree in engineering technology, environmental technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, construction management, or related technical field AND one (1) year of experience performing engineering support tasks involved in one or more of the following: planning, surveying, design, inspection, construction, research and statistics, testing, investigation, maintenance or construction of various types of civil engineering projects.
OR
Associate degree in civil engineering, environmental technology, engineering technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, or related field AND three (3) years of experience as described above.
OR
High school graduation or equivalent AND five (5) years of experience as described above.
OR
One (1) year as an AOT Technician II with the State of Vermont.
Preferred QualificationsAbility to execute clear, concise communication orally and in writing.
Familiarity with MUTCD; AASHTO publications; VTrans Standards, Specifications and policies.
Familiarity with pavement marking and/or sign layout and installation.
Ability to read, understand and review construction plans.
Ability to determine priorities among simultaneous competing requests and requirements, and track progress on multiple tasks.
Ability to interact politely and professionally with the public on a variety of sensitive issues regarding traffic control devices and highway safety.
Special RequirementsSome positions in this job class may require possession of a valid driver's license.
