The Torts Section of the Christine O. Gregoire Spokane Divisionhas an opening for an experienced trial attorney with at least five years of practice experience.

Attorneys in the Torts Division defend state agencies and their employees in state and federal courts in personal injury, civil rights, and employment cases. The work presents challenging factual situations involving the work of dedicated state employees and their agencies, often defending against novel theories of liability. Duties

This Managing Attorney Leads a section of eight lawyers (including the Managing Attorney) and 19 professional staff. Lawyers in the section defend tort and civil rights cases brought against the Washington State Department of Transportation (DOT), Washington State Patrol (WSP), the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF), the Department of Corrections (DOC), three universities and higher education institutions as well as other state entities east of the Cascades. Managing Attorneys in Torts carry an active caseload and lead a team of litigation attorneys and professional staff by providing leadership, mentoring, support, and training.

The Managing Attorney’s supervisory and direct case responsibilities involve all aspects of litigation, including:
  • Conducting and answering discovery;
  • Bringing and answering motions;
  • Engaging in alternative dispute resolution;
  • Negotiating settlements as appropriate;
  • Taking depositions
  • Trying jury and bench trials in state and federal courts; and
  • Working on appeals, including briefing and oral argument.

The Managing Attorney is responsible for maintaining and applying a comprehensive knowledge of tort law; working productively with agency clients to defend cases; assisting client agencies with risk management; and developing and executing legal strategy. Mentoring skills and willingness to actively engage in the professional development of lawyers and professional staff are “must have” qualities. The Managing Attorney serves as a member of the Torts Division and Spokane Division Management teams and is expected to actively contribute to both.

Qualifications

In addition to meeting the requirements to serve as an Assistant Attorney General, a strong foundation of litigation expertise is important for this position, and applicants should have demonstrated competence executing the litigation responsibilities. The ideal candidate will also possess:
  • Outstanding analytical, research, and writing skills;
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Excellent problem solving skills, strong attention to detail, and strong time management skills;
  • Excellent judgment;
  • Demonstrated competence in mentoring and supervising other attorneys and professional staff;
  • Experience and poise in interacting with high level client representatives; and
  • The interest and ability to work well with people who have diverse backgrounds, experiences, and communication styles, in a collaborative team environment including litigation support and investigative staff, the client agencies and agency Risk Managers, the Office of Risk Management, and other Torts Division attorneys.

Tort litigation experience is highly advantageous. Experience representing state agency clients is preferred, but not required. While the position is located in Spokane, occasional travel to other areas of the state can be expected.

Applicants must have graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program; and be licensed to practice law in Washington state. (Applicants who meet the other stated qualifications and are actively pursuing admission by motion will also be considered.) This Managing Assistant Attorney General position is represented by the Association of Washington Assistant Attorneys General (AWAAG) / Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) AFSCME Council 28, AFL-CIO. Managing AAG salaries are set between $78,240 and $146,556. The exact amount is set in accordance with Appendix B of theAWAAG CBA.
