Salary Range: $108,726 Annually
The Clallam Bay Corrections Center (CBCC) is an adult correctional facility operating in support of the Washington State Department of Corrections mission and the goal to improve public safety. CBCC is seeking a detail focused and proactive problem solver to join their team as a Correctional Captain! The Correctional Captain is tasked with the goal of providing leadership for all other uniformed staff regardless of where they are assigned and administering and coordinating security related activities at a correctional facility level.
Under the direction of the Associate Superintendent, your work will involve assuming responsibility for the interpretation of policy in the daily operations of a correctional facility with up to 850 incarcerated individuals. You will be responsible for the administration of essential staff and support services in connection with the review of activity reports, personal conferences, and the successful operations of assigned activities.
Correctional Captains are tasked with ensuring first and second level supervisors' work is reviewed using conference and management analysis techniques as well as making recommendations for hire and promotion of custody staff, including completion of appointment approval requests for Associate Superintendent/Superintendent’s signature. You will evaluate and make decisions concerning requests from the Lieutenant and Correctional Sergeants regarding operational areas of the institution, staff, and incarcerated individuals.
This position is required to administer and coordinate all security related activities of a principle organizational segment for a medium to max security correctional facility or serve in an administrative capacity. As an Incident Commander, you will coordinate operational procedures with the Shift Commander during all emergency responses.

Duties

As a Correctional Captain, some of your duties will include:
- Supporting the principles of the Department’s Diversity Goals which are necessary to change the culture of the department
- Directing the custody program at a maximum, close, and medium-security correctional facility
- Assuming the role of the highest ranking custody representative reporting directly to an Associate Superintendent of Operations
- Serving as an institutional Duty Officer on rotation to respond to significant institutional problems or emergencies including:
- Giving instructions to on duty shift commanders for the transport of individuals to other facilities
- Providing direction on emergency management during inmate related disturbances or other situations affecting institutional security
- Developing Operational Memorandums governing custody and security related functions such as:
- Security inspections of the facility
- Post order requirements
- Staff accountability
- Emergency response plan
- Mutual aid agreements with other state and local agencies
- Assigned shift duties
- First response to emergencies
- Planning, assigning, and directing shift responsibilities consistent with security and safety needs
- Producing and analyzing monthly reports on overtime usage, shift effectiveness, searches, incarcerated individual problems, significant staff issues, intelligence information and activities, training, and emergency response
- Completing performance evaluations on employees directly supervised and sign as reviewer on second level supervisor evaluation
- Completing critical incident investigations for the Superintendent on situations affecting the safety or security of the facility, i.e. escapes, serious assaults, etc.
- Conducting audits and investigations, as required
Qualifications
What we need (required qualifications):
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Eight (8) years of professional corrections/criminal justice experience
- Up to two (2) years of experience may be substituted for a degree in Criminology or a closely related field from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the US Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)
- Three (3) years of progressive supervisory responsibilities and/or managerial responsibilities, including one year supervising personnel in a criminal justice arena
- Encouragement and development of a work atmosphere dedicated to the agency’s vision of quality, teamwork, professionalism, and accountability
- Effective security practices to include emergency response/preparedness
- Management principles, leadership, and public relations skills and management of custody FTE resources
- Foster community partnerships and possesses strong oral and written communication skills
- Coaching, mentoring, counseling, and conflict resolution skills
- Employee development and training
- Interpretation and application of Department of Correction (DOC) Policies and applicable collective bargaining agreement, Civil Service Rules, Revised Code of Washington, Washington Administrative Codes and judicial procedures
- Highest standards of professional and ethical conduct in support of a diverse workforce and budget management

Telework Details
This position may be allocated for telework. Work may be performed from your home or another offsite location within the state of Washington using a reliable internet or cellular hotspot service at that time. Employees are expected to perform assigned duties in a safe manner, to take proper care all state-issued equipment, and maintain confidentiality of all information in possession while working offsite. Employees will be required to commute to a Department of Corrections facility or field office as business requires, to potentially include components of the onboarding process. Some offices will have a “drop in” area available, however, a dedicated workspace within a DOC facility will not be provided.
