As an Environmental Inspector, you will inspect and provide oversight of underground storage tanks (UST) systems. You’ll have the opportunity to cultivate relationships with gas station owners throughout the region, help them better understand why monitoring of their USTs is so important, and ensure that their testing and monitoring fall within our state regulations. You’ll work with UST site owners to maintain compliance, and when necessary, issue penalties. We are looking for applicants who enjoy working independently, are self-starters, and have the ability to interact effectively with the public and communicate with a diverse audience. Program Mission: The mission of the Toxics Cleanup Program (TCP) is to protect Washington’s human health and the environment by preventing and cleaning up pollution and supporting sustainable communities and natural resources for the benefit of future and current generations.
Tele-work options for this position:This position will have flexibility of a hybrid schedule. In addition to field work, this position will be eligible for up to a 90% tele-work schedule, after the completion of the probationary period. Duties
Because underground storage tanks (USTs) are out of sight, people do not realize the threat they pose. Petroleum contamination represents the largest percentage of polluted sites in the state of Washington. The Environmental Inspector's role of preventing leaks from tanks is critical. This job is also the public face of Ecology, so excellent communication skills are essential for this role.
What you will do:
- Complete Underground Storage Tank (UST) inspections.
- Conduct initial investigations in response to potential petroleum product spills.
- Help owners and operators understand how to achieve regulatory compliance.
- Work to help decommission outdated or non-functioning USTs.
- Provide technical assistance on UST installations and retrofitting.
- Respond to any UST complaints.
- Take enforcement action(s) as necessary.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:
- 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
- 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent
A total of six years of experience and/or education as described below:
- Experience in: environmental analysis, sampling, oversight, consulting, and/or environmental planning.
- Education involving: major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning, or other allied field.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

- Compliance and enforcement experience.
- Strong capacity for scientific data assimilation and analysis.
- Experience in regulation interpretation and reporting.
- Routine work with database and spreadsheet software for data management and interpretation.
