State of Washington Dept. of Revenue is Hiring a Real Estate Excise Tax (REET) - Excise Tax Examiner 4 (ETE 4) Near Olympia, WA

This opportunity is only open to Department of Revenue employees.
Attention Revenue! Audit division's REET team has a new and exciting opportunity as an Excise Tax Examiner 4 (ETE 4). Come join the team in support of ensuring the fair and uniform application of tax rules and laws while promoting the optimal level of voluntary tax reporting and payment for a growing number of programs.

Duties

This position is a subject matter expert for the REET program, including statewide audits of property transfers recorded at the county, exemption audits, and controlling interest audits filed with DOR. If selected, your expertise will also be called upon regarding tax administration, audit policies and procedures, excise tax rules and laws, taxpayer rights, agency responsibilities, management principles, and personnel rules. Reporting to the Real Estate Excise Tax Administration Manager, here are some other duties you can expect:

  • Completes theory and math review of audit assessments and reviews Administrative Review & Hearing petition responses.
  • Approves lower-level audit assessments and no-tax audits.
  • Assists staff with difficult tax liability discussions.
  • Coordinates and provides training support to Real Estate Excise Tax staff.
  • Serves as the Tax Administration Manager’s back up as a division liaison to other divisions, county Treasurers, stakeholders, and taxpayers.
  • Assists in the development of new and/or revised rules, excise tax bulletins, tax determinations, proposed legislation, and impact statements in coordination with internal policy divisions.
  • Participates in presenting in-person educational outreach to county staff and stakeholders.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with these qualifications:
One year as an Excise Tax Examiner 3
OR
Two (2) years or more DOR experience at the senior or lead level in accounting, auditing, compliance or tax administration, providing 12 semester (18 quarter) hours of accounting course work has been completed.
OR
Three (3) years of experience at the senior or lead level in accounting, compliance, auditing, or tax administration, providing 12 semester (18 quarter) hours of accounting course work has been completed.
In addition to the above qualifications, preference may be granted to candidates with a:

  • A bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, or related field with a minimum of 12 semester (18 quarter) hours of accounting coursework.
  • Additional professional-level qualifying experience will substitute year for year for education provided the required accounting coursework has been completed; real estate, appraisal or related experience.
