The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking to fill a Rest Area Attendant position, which will perform janitorial services, facility maintenance, and landscaping activities at our Safety Rest Areas. Reporting to the maintenance facility in Auburn, WA, the Rest Area Attendant must possess a willingness to work any shift, often for long hours on short notice, including weekends and holidays. This position requires a self-directed individual who takes independent action to resolve maintenance problems as they occur. Our ideal candidate will also demonstrate a strong commitment to customer service when responding to inquiries and complaints from the traveling public.
What to Expect
This position requires responding to unscheduled emergency calls. Employees must report to the assigned duty station within 45 minutes of after-hours calls. The job may also involve alternate work schedules, callbacks, extended hours, rotating shifts, weekends, standby, and holidays.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Rest Area Attendant will:

  • Perform a variety of janitorial services at highway safety rest areas, including but not limited to cleaning, disinfecting, replenishing supplies, sweeping, and mopping floors in facilities.
  • Collect garbage bags and pick up litter and debris in and around rest areas.
  • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks and entrances.
  • Inspect restrooms and perform minor repairs needed to install plumbing, lighting, and paper dispensers.
  • Operate tools, equipment, and machinery, including, but not limited to, weed cutters, hedge trimmers, and other various hand and electric-powered tools.
  • Maintain landscaped areas by mowing (riding and push mowers), trimming and pruning trees and shrubbery, and weeding flower and shrubbed beds.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and vehicle records.
  • Document data collection using an iPad.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with the traveling public daily.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • High school diploma or possession of a GED certificate and one (1) year of experience performing maintenance activities in a related field of work.
  • Possess and maintain an unrestricted valid driver's license to legally operate vehicles in Washington State.
  • Ability to manipulate up to 50 pounds.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have the following:
  • One (1) year of experience performing landscaping activities such as mowing, pruning, and fertilizing.
  • One (1) year of experience performing minor repair and maintenance of public buildings, including janitorial duties and plumbing/electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of a variety of cleaning agents and how to mix them for effective cleaning.
  • Experience utilizing computer software such as Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook, and tablets, such as iPads.
  • Valid Traffic Control/Flagging card and experience performing traffic control per MUTCD, including planning, setting signs, cones, or barrels, and flagging.
  • Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License
  • Backflow Prevention Tester Certification
  • First Aid/CPR Training

Important Notes
  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
  • The duties involve physical work performed outdoors in various weather conditions, including strong winds and other hazards, both during the day and at night. This includes maintenance tasks, driving in heavy traffic areas, and near high-speed vehicles, regardless of the weather or road conditions. Other responsibilities include picking up litter, cleaning encampments, removing debris and dead animals, and assisting with the removal of unlawful dwellings. The work may also require navigating rough terrain, climbing stairs and ladders, and working around equipment. Maintenance work may also involve working at heights exceeding 25 feet.
  • In addition to the salary range listed, a general wage increase of 3% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2024.
  • The salary listed includes the legislatively approved 10% premium for HMW1 positions located in Auburn, WA, King County.
  • The salary listed includes the legislative-approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
