The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Engineer 2 to serve as the Lane Engineer for the Toll Division in Seattle, WA. This position supports the Lead Lane Engineer to ensure high performance of the toll lane systems. Their duties include but are not limited to managing and monitoring vendor contracts, internal coordination to ensure reliable operations, supporting the design and development of toll systems, and performing technical review of toll system documentation. Additionally, this position supports field work for new toll projects, and for maintenance and operation activities.
 
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Lane Engineer will:
  • Analyze and monitor the capture and delivery of toll trips.
  • Monitor roadside vendor operations to identify potential issues, resolve them quickly, and communicate their impacts to stakeholders. 
  • Assist the Operations team with managing high-impact operational issues by gathering information from involved parties, providing timely updates to stakeholders, and keeping detailed records. 
  • Attend and contribute to weekly roadside vendor coordination meetings to address critical issues, report progress, adjust priorities, and assign follow-up tasks. 
  • Conduct periodic field testing of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) transponders, antennas, and readers to ensure adequate performance. 
  • Monitor roadside system performance to support continuous operation of all WSDOT toll collection facilities. Includes scheduled and ad-hoc verification of toll transponder reads, image capture, vehicle classification, and other processes. 
  • Communicate and coordinate with internal groups to ensure reliable tolling operations.
  • Provide input on the design, development, installation, and testing of toll systems.
  • Monitor and report on installation of roadside toll equipment. Will include visiting the project sites and verifying installation progress and design compliance. Occasional night work if installation is occurring at night.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 or equivalent such as Transportation Technician 3 or Bridge Engineer 1 or equivalent experience. 
OR 
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 or equivalents such as Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1 or equivalent in the fields above. 
OR 
  • A Master's degree with major study in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation or a closely related field. 
 
In addition: 
  • Valid Driver’s License 
  • Knowledge of data handling and visualization techniques 
  • Knowledge of computer and communication systems 
  • Knowledge of basic statistics and statistical analysis 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data 
  • Ability to seek continuous improvement with regard to procedures and troubleshooting process 
  • Ability to train others 
  • Ability to work in both office and field conditions near traffic
  • Ability to work night and weekend shifts occasionally

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • BS in Engineering 
  • Basic knowledge of toll system equipment and operations 
  • Previous experience or advanced knowledge of toll system equipment 
  • Programming experience with focus on data management and/or data science 
  • Basic knowledge of performance measures and experience monitoring system performance 
  • Experience with managing and delivering small transportation or ITS projects 
  • Experience with ITS system operations 
  • Experience with traffic and WSDOT design standards 
  • Field inspection experience

  • The salary range listed includes the legislative approved general wage increase of 3%, effective on July 1, 2024.
  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County. 
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements.
