Duties: The State University of New York at New Paltz (SUNY New Paltz) and Information Technology Services (ITS) invites applications for the position of Desktop Support Technician. This is a full-time, on-site position as a member of the Desktop Support team to support approximately 1000 employees and 1500 devices. Expectations include providing technology-related support for hardware and software in administrative offices, faculty offices, conference rooms and campus digital signage. We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a learning mindset to work in a team-oriented environment. We are dedicated to supporting learning opportunities to enhance initiatives related to software deployment and automation.

The successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to work in a team-oriented and collaborative environment, have strong written communication skills and deliver excellent customer service. The Desktop Support Technician is expected to conduct research into software-related issues and products, demonstrate analytical and problem-solving abilities with a keen attention to detail.

Flexibility and adaptability regarding learning and understanding modern technologies as well as the ability to walk, stand, kneel, crouch and lift boxes up to 50 lbs. is essential for this position.
Duties:
  • Perform hands-on fixes at the desktop level, including installing and upgrading software, installing hardware components, implementing file backups, and configuring systems and applications.
  • Provide limited remote technical support for campus-owned equipment.
  • Accurately document instances of IT asset failure, repair, removal, communication with vendors as well as moves and changes in the ticketing system (TeamDynamix).
  • Act as liaison to organize onsite visits from vendors for repair of computer hardware, when necessary.
  • Install, configure, test, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot end-user computers, including related hardware and software.
  • Assess the need for and implement performance upgrades to end-user devices based on software technical specifications.
  • Receive and respond to incoming calls, service desk tickets, email, or chat regarding equipment incidents.
  • Maintain inventory of supported equipment, and upholding procedures for logging and reporting end-user devices in the ticketing system (TeamDynamix).
  • Perform preventative maintenance, including the installation of security fixes, patches, anti-virus/anti-malware software.
  • Write programming scripts (PowerShell, Python) to enhance automation initiatives in the deployment of operating systems and software
  • Develop, document, and maintain policies, procedures and associated training plans for system administration and appropriate use.
  • Conduct research on end-user devices in support of standardization and procurement efforts. Evaluate and recommend products for purchase.
  • Write technical specifications for purchase of end-user devices and related products.
Qualifications: Required:
  • Associate degree in Computer Science or related field of study and 1-2 years full-time work experience providing hardware and software support.
  • Excellent technical knowledge of Microsoft Windows and macOS operating systems.
  • Proven experience with troubleshooting principles, methodologies, and issue resolution techniques (ITIL).
  • Hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience with basic network diagnostics.
  • Experience with Microsoft Active Directory.
  • Knowledge of trends in technology relating to software applications.
  • Basic technical knowledge of programming/scripting languages, including PowerShell and Python.
Preferred:
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 2-3 years of experience providing technical support of higher education or business information technology system.
  • 2-3 years of experience working at a Service Desk/Desktop Support or other Tier 2-3 support entity
  • 1-2 years of experience in programming/scripting languages, including PowerShell and Python.
  • Solid working knowledge of current automation technologies, such as Ansible.
  • Experience with mobile device management (MDM), such as JAMF and/or Intune.
  • Experience providing remote technical support
  • Experience with inventory management.
  • Experience working with and serving diverse populations.
  • Basic understanding of Linux
