Job Title: Surgical Technician

Reports To: OR Nurse Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Summary: Surgical Technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

1. Focuses on patient priorities with a kind and caring attitude to ensure quality care.

1. Checks supplies and equipment needed for procedure

1. Scrubs, gowns and gloves

1. Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment and medications / solutions needed for procedure

1. Performs appropriate counts with the circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed

1. Gowns and gloves surgeons and assistants

1. Helps in draping sterile field

1. Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure

1. Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure

1. Prepares sterile dressings

1. Assists other members of the team with cleaning of the room and prepping room for the next patient

1. Obtains and prepares specimens as required

1. Actively participates in the Time Out procedure

1. Picks cases for future procedures

1. Responsible to communicate preference card information to circulator

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

Graduate of approved Operating Room Technician school.

Language Ability:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Math Ability:

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software.
