This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS)* and applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications to be considered for this position:
Required experience: one year of satisfactory hands-on experience in the operation and maintenance of boilers and/or auxiliary equipment or HVAC equipment in commercial, industrial, or institutional facilities.
Applicants with an associate degree or higher in a related field can substitute will meet the required experience requirement.
Applicants may also be appointed to this position if currently reachable on the appropriate eligible list for this title OR are a current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service in a position allocated to a Grade 14 or above and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
Duties Description Under the direction of Plant Utilities Engineer 2 and Plant Utilities Engineer 1, the incumbent will:
•Operate and maintain boilers and all auxiliary equipment.
•Assist in troubleshooting repairs and replacement of all steam distribution equipment.
•Responsible for the cleaning of boilers and all power plant equipment.
•Use computer programs such as LATS, AIM, etc.
•Perform other duties as assigned.
Operational Needs:
•Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver's License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicle is required.
•Asbestos certification required within 90 days of appointment as well as compliance with all related PESH/OSHA regulations.
•Utilities Management is a 24/7 operation; thus, night, weekend, and holiday work is required based on shift assignment and operational need.
Shift:
This is a 24/7 shift operation - shift assignment is subject to bidding based on OGS City of Albany Seniority time and may be subject to change based on operational requirements.
Additional Comments *There is no examination required for appointment to a NY HELPS position. Candidates hired before May 2024 will be appointed on a temporary basis. In May 2024, satisfactory employees will receive permanent, non-competitive appointments and will begin a probationary period.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected that NY HELPS employees will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to take an exam. Employees will then be afforded with all the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
