We are looking for a process development engineer to configure a demonstration scale electrolyzer to validate multiple electrolysis process chemistries for new areas for decarbonization.

Job Summary

This position provides a unique opportunity for a self-starter engineer to make meaningful contributions to our company’s technology. As a Process Development Engineer, you will be the first member of our Demo Plant implementation team with responsibilities that range across traditional process engineering, logistics, and project management functions. You should be capable of making progress on complex, ambiguous tasks with minimal supervision and have a good sense of your own strengths and weaknesses. You should also be equally comfortable with engineering design and field engineering, including some hands-on construction and operations work when required. You will be responsible for helping new members of the team transition into the organization smoothly and fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities

1. Logistics:

• Inventory current Demo Plant equipment and documentation and identify repurposing opportunities that align with our new processes.
• Support other team members working on transportation logistics to transfer equipment from international locations into the Bay Area.
• Support other team members in ensuring compliance with all governmental regulations such as construction and operating permits.

2. Design and Development:

• Under the guidance of senior engineers, develop technical documents for the Demo Plant including detailed P&IDs, equipment lists, start-up and shutdown procedures, etc.
• Size and procure new process equipment (tanks, pumps, HX, valves, etc.).
• Under the guidance of senior engineers, lead process design reviews and safety reviews (e.g. FMEA or HAZOPS). Ensure follow-up activities are completed in a timely fashion.
• Periodically present findings and updates to the CEO and board.

3. Manufacturing and Production:

• Assist with onsite construction and shakedown activities including as-built P&IDs, engineering reviews, and safety compliance (LOTO, permit-to-enter, etc.).
• Provide technical support during the fabrication, assembly, and installation of mechanical systems, including hands-on construction when required.
• Assess process performance against design metrics by completing mass and energy balances and opportunities for improvement.
• Develop and maintain documentation, including SOPs, LOTO procedures, maintenance records etc.

4. Project Management:

• Develop and maintain accurate schedule information including critical path analysis (i.e. Gantt Charts).
• Determine and justify upcoming personnel and resource requirements.
• Provide budget updates.

Qualifications:

• Ability to contribute within an early-stage technology environment.
• Bachelor’s degree in chemical or mechanical engineering with a strong grasp of engineering fundamentals and an excellent understanding of how engineering fundamentals are applied in real-world operating systems.
• 0-5 years of experience in a process engineering environment within an operating company, an EPC or similar. Some experience with pilot/demo facilities is particularly attractive.
• Familiarity with at least one of the following: P&ID development in MS Visio, LucidChart or similar; the implementation of PLCs for process automation and control; or EHS activities including FMEA/LOPA/HAZOP, engineering safety equipment (PRV, cutout, etc.), safe construction/operations activities (LOTO/permit-to-enter, HAZWOPER, etc.).
• Proficiency in basic process engineering principles, including mass and energy balances, unit operations, heat/mass transfer, fluid flow, thermodynamics, process controls, etc.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience with AspenPlus, ChemCad or other process simulation packages is a plus.
• Knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to mechanical design and safety.
• Some project management experience and the ability to work-in cross-functional teams will also be beneficial.
