Position OverviewThe Emerging Teaching Artist position is a year-long temporary part-time position for entry level teaching artists to develop their practice, receive training, gain mentorship, and learn more about the field of Teaching Artistry while gaining hands-on experience in the field. The Emerging Teaching Artist will:
  • Assist in the facilitation of Steppenwolf residency workshops in CPS classrooms and Young Adult Council meetings onsite at Steppenwolf
  • Receive one on one mentorship with an experienced Steppenwolf Lead TA
  • Attend several professional development sessions over the course of the year to gain foundational Teaching Artistry skills.
  • Observe and participate in Steppenwolf curriculum development, training, and implementation process alongside the Steppenwolf Teaching Artist Cohort.
Facilitation Responsibilities
  • Observe, support & occasionally facilitate activities in Step Ed residency workshops at least 3 different partner schools under the mentorship of the Lead TA at each of those schools.
  • Observe, support & occasionally facilitate activities at Young Adult Council meetings under the mentorship of the Lead TA at Steppenwolf’s Loft Education facility.
Prep/Training Responsibilities
  • Attend all Step Ed TA cohort educator training and participate in other PD opportunities. Read and see all Steppenwolf shows and do another contextual prep work as assigned per residency semester, as well as scheduling and prep meetings with teaching teams.
  • Read lesson plans prepared by Lead TA before each residency workshop and Young Adult Council Meeting and arrive at least 10 minutes before the start of class/meeting time, prepared to support the facilitation of any planned activities for the day.
  • Engage in feedback conversations with Lead TA mentors to receive input on progress toward skill development goals.
  • Complete 2 workshop assessments per 4 workshop residencies and pre and post residency assessments as needed.
  • Promptly record working hours in Paycom on a weekly basis, keep track of gas mileage for reimbursement for transportation to schools, and respond to emails and surveys from the Manager of School Programs in a timely and responsible manner throughout the year.
Desired Qualifications
  • Passionate Learning Mindset: The ideal candidate will possess a passion and enthusiasm for working with teens in the arts more broadly, and in theatre specifically. They will be invested in growing their Teaching Artistry practice and leaned-in to the process of developing their arts education skills.
  • Arts Education//Facilitation: New to the field of Teaching Artistry, but has minimal/some experience working with young folks, students, teachers, community members, etc. in an educational setting
  • Communication/Collaboration: The ability to communicate transparently and effectively within a teaching partnership and the larger Step Ed Team. A desire to be part of a highly collaborative team that works hard, takes care of each other well, values joy & community, and always honors the humanity of both the students and the educators they work with.
  • Values Alignment: Holds a teaching philosophy that is in alignment with the core values of Steppenwolf Education: Intergenerational Learning (we learn from the teens just as much as they learn from us), Rebellious Imagination (encouraging bold risk-taking over compliance), Creative Inquiry (inviting deep noticing, new patterns of thinking, and reflection in all processes), and Collaborative Art-Making (building and creating with an ensemble ethos).
  • Cultural Competency: A commitment to principles and practices of anti-racism and anti-oppression and the ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures and socio- economic backgrounds. Additionally, a desire to continue to expand tools for trauma-informed practices in the classroom.

  • Several initial meetings in early August
  • Thursday & Friday, August 22nd & 23rd, 9:30am-4:30pm
  • Friday & Saturday, August 30th & 31st, 9:30am-4:30pm
  • Saturday, September 14th, 9:30am-4:30pm
  • Saturday, September 21st, 9:30am-4:30pm
  • Weekdays During School Hours from Sept 23-Dec 20th*
  • Wednesdays Afterschool (4-7pm) from Sept 18-Dec 20th**

  • Friday & Saturday, January 24th & 25th, 9:30am-4:30pm
  • Saturday, February 8th, 9:30am-4:30pm
  • Saturday, September 21st, 9:30am-4:30pm
  • Weekdays During School Hours from Feb 10th-May 16th*
  • Wednesdays Afterschool (4-7pm) from Jan 8th-June 18th**
  • Emerging TAs would not need to be available every weekday during school hours during these windows but would need space in their schedule to work at least two full days or four half days a week with Steppenwolf for residency workshops during these spans of dates.
  • Wednesday afterschool commitment would be for Young Adult Council (YAC) meetings and would be shared with a second Emerging TA (either alternating weekly or one TA doing Fall semester, and one TA doing Spring)
CompensationSteppenwolf Emerging TAs are paid at facilitation rate of $35/hour for all hours spent actively assisting in residency workshops or YAC meetings and a prep rate of $20/hr for all trainings and prep tasks accomplished outside of the classroom.
Emerging TAs are responsible for commuting to/from their assigned residency schools and will be provided with travel reimbursement.
