Position SummaryThis position plays a key role in the manufacture of structural cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels. Working closely with teammates and management to master all machining methods, techniques to quality standards associated with bringing CLT to a completed state. Individuals in this position may also assist when needed in other phases within the production processes.
Essential Functions
  • Consistently demonstrate commitment and support for the Sterling vision, mission, policies and procedures.
  • Performs work in a safe manner in compliance with the job safety analysis (JSA), and other work instructions and policies as outlined by management for the use of hand and power tools, and saws.
  • In accordance with policies and procedures, wear the designated personal protective equipment (PPE) required.
  • Maintain a clean workspace that is clear of debris and clutter following the guidelines outlined in the 5S visual factory standard, end of shift cleaning protocols, and tool placement(s).
  • Follow all operating, cleaning, and safety procedures in the operation of company equipment and machines.
  • Immediately report any safety related injury or illness and/or any machinery failure to safety and follow protocols as outlined for lockout, tagout and as outlined in the company policies and procedures.
  • Perform routine pre and post operation maintenance checks on equipment including, but not limited to, CNC tolerance verification, CNC tool sharpening, hand tool blade sharpening, saw chain sharpening, and hand tool operations.
  • Understand and follow written and verbal instructions regarding the production line.
  • Advanced understanding of lumber grade and species.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, 3D models, part drawings, product specifications for correct machining.
  • Perform pre-cut quality control checks, confirm setup and layout specifications.
  • Operate CNC machine, hand and power tools, circular saws, beam cham saw, and notch cutters to cut CLT panels to specifications as outlined and within quality standards.
  • Perform quality control inspections with teammates including dimensional and cut quality, and appearance checks.
  • Immediately report quality discrepancies and concerns to management and follow all data recording procedures that apply.
  • Communicate with team members and support teams to ensure production deadlines are achieved at high quality levels with minimal wasted time and materials.
  • Cross train within the team, and across other departments, as needed and required.
  • All other duties and projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Highschool graduate, or GED is required. Journeyman Carpenter, or other comparable trade school certification preferred.
  • At least one (1) year of experience is required, two (2) years preferred, in woodworking or carpentry.
  • Must be able to use and interpret blueprints, specification reports, 3D models, tape measurements and digital calipers.
  • Must be proficient with power tools, sanders, and saws including chain beam saws, circular saws, notch and groove cutters.
  • Strong math skills with ability to convert decimals to fractions and understand dimensional tolerances.
  • Previous production experience and fork-lift and/or overhead crane operations preferred.
