Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
1. Assist in the preparation of plans and permits for, and the execution of, budgeted silvicultural activities. Supervise the work of contractors, ensuring company specifications are met, Best Management Practices are observed and compliance with Forest Practice Rules is maintained.
2. Measure new plantation survival. Create and maintain young stand inventories. Develop prescriptions for treatments. Design and execute sampling of young stands at various ages and after certain prescribed treatments.
3. Participate in forestland security, fire protection and silvicultural teams.
4. Assist in the maintenance of all resource’s equipment and stores.
5. Assisting other Company departments as needed.
6. Knowledge and application of county, state and federal regulations. Adherence to SFI principles, including Stimson’s sustainable forest policies and implementation procedures.
Participation in SFI, state, federal and internal audits as appropriate. Adherence to all company policies, including, but not limited to, vehicles, safety and internet access.
Maintain and promote workplace safety.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
1. A basic understanding of western silvicultural systems and practices, knowledge of regional forest species and their management.
2. Computer software skills, a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Good file management skills. Experience with ESRI’s GIS software and the applications of such to forest operations / inventory needs desirable.
Must be able to keep abreast of technology and apply it as appropriate to improve results.
3. A demonstrable aptitude for work with tools and power equipment, including power saws, various types of fire pumps and manual transmission motor vehicles is a plus.
5. Must be self-motivated, able to work independently with minimal supervision. Work productively over difficult topography and in inclement weather for extended periods.
6. Possess the ability to lift 50 lbs., stand for up to 10 hours a day, reach with hands and arms, climb, stoop and bend at waist, and move equipment as needed.
Able to navigate with aerial photos, maps and compass.
Education and Experience : A Bachelor of Science degree in forest management or forest engineering or equivalent education and experience is required
