Stoughton Area School District is Hiring a Payroll Specialist Near Stoughton, WI

Job Summary:

The Payroll Specialist acts as the technical expert related to all payroll duties. This position is responsible for payroll and benefit processing.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Processes semi-monthly payroll.
  • Maintains processes to meet federal and state payroll laws.
  • Advises supervisors and time keepers regarding payroll compliance with employee handbook and federal and state laws related to payments, benefits deductions and compensation.
  • Responsible for calculation, preparation and transmittance of monthly, quarterly and annual reports including federal and state tax deposits, W2s, 1095s and WRS.
  • Updates benefit enrollment/changes. Audit reports to ensure accuracy. Input enrollment/change data in a timely manner to coincide with transmittal to vendors. Review and update summary plan descriptions and applicable policies to ensure accuracy of administration in plan documents.
  • Prepares monthly reconciliation of benefits in collaboration with the District Accountant.
  • Supports and helps execute employee benefits by calculating appropriate deductions, working with vendors, and ensuring appropriate reporting for benefits including, but not limited to,

403(b) and 457(k) plans

Wisconsin Retirement System

Health, dental and vision insurance

Short and long term disability

Life Insurance

Flexible spending accounts (medical and dependent care)

HRA accounts

  • Completes Verification of Income forms.
  • Works closely with the District Accountant.
  • Works closely with the Human Resources department.
  • Works collaboratively with the HR Generalist on new employee training.
  • Utilizes a variety of district software systems to ensure accuracy of information and manage employee data for employment, salaries and benefits.
  • Support retirees and employees seeking retirement to answer questions and prepare them for a successful retirement.
  • Other related duties and ad hoc projects as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

  • Two year degree or equivalent experience in Accounting and Business
  • Thorough knowledge of payroll procedures, including computation of withholding taxes and other deductions
  • Extremely detailed oriented with a proven track record for accuracy
  • Knowledge of Wisconsin State Retirement System preferred
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and integrity while executing responsibilities
  • Speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations and listens to get clarification
  • Strong work ethic, ability to adapt to rapidly-changing environment
  • Sound independent judgment, analytical and problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others
  • Experience with payroll processing using electronic data processing
  • Must have excellent communication skills in order to work effectively with staff, retirees and the community
  • Understanding of needing to manage personal time away from work around semi-monthly payroll

Environment: This job primarily operates in a professional indoor environment but will include occasional travel to other SASD buildings or out-of-district meetings and training (up to 10%).
