About The OpportunityJoin STS Technical Services as a Mechanical R&D Design Engineer specializing in Aircraft Cabin Seating in Greensboro, North Carolina. Be at the forefront of designing the next generation of cabin seating systems for our client. This role focuses on enhancing passenger experience by developing innovative seating solutions that combine comfort, functionality, and advanced technology.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design and Development: Lead the development of cabin seating systems, focusing on ergonomics, adjustability, kinematics, mechanisms, and next-generation features. Incorporate human factors and smooth mechanical functions into your designs.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with in-house engineering, industrial design teams, and external suppliers to ensure high-quality cabin experiences. Interface with Structures, Electrical Systems, and other relevant teams to achieve seamless integration.
  • Prototyping and Testing: Lead prototyping and testing of early concepts, ensuring designs meet ergonomic and functional requirements. Conduct human factors assessments and validate engineering designs.
  • Project Management: Manage project deliverables, schedules, and milestones. Provide program status reports, develop and review technical engineering drawings, and undertake system certification activities.
  • Innovation: Research new materials, installation techniques, and design-for-manufacturing strategies. Utilize novel approaches to solve complex problems and enhance production efficiency.
  • Leadership and Mentorship: While initially an individual contributor role, there is potential for team leadership and mentorship of junior engineers.
Education, Work Experience, Certification, and/or Licensure:
  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering from a four-year college or university. (Equivalent experience and training may be considered.)
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in Engineering.
  • Experience: 5 years of engineering experience with at least three years in design engineering and supplier integration related to mechanical/interior design for commercial aircraft.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Design Expertise: Working knowledge of aircraft interiors design and development.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in CATIA V5 workbenches or equivalent 3D modeling tools (Solidworks, Unigraphics), and Teamcenter (or equivalent PLM tool).
  • Industry Standards: In-depth knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and familiarity with 14CFR Part 23/25.
  • Communication: Ability to communicate effectively across all levels within an organization and present data clearly and concisely.
  • Problem Solving: Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or within a team environment.
Physical Requirements:
  • Exposure to equipment operational noise, heat, cold, dust, and aircraft equipment, parts, or fuel odors.
  • Ability to stand, sit, squat, walk, bend, climb ladders, move, reach, or stretch for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to pull, push, carry, lift, or move items up to 10 lbs. throughout the work shift without assistance.
  • Ability to pull, push, carry, lift, or move materials/people/items/equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. or more with the use of company-provided reach assistance technology.
