Job Description

Performance

The Health Aide shall be evaluated annually based on goals and objectives composed and agreed to by the Student Service Facilitator, Superintendent, and the Southgate Academy Board.

Qualification Requirements

  • Education and/or Experience: Current CPR certification; Experience in working with children and/or health programs and other such qualifications as the governing board finds desirable and acceptable regarding ill students and injuries.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret document such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present and interface information with agencies, employees of organization, and if needed to the general public.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interests, commissions, proportions, percentages, and apply basic algebra and geometry.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply basic skills. Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, which includes use of the computer and copy machine.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Include the following but not limited to and may require other duties as needed to implement school health service programs through assessment, analogy, implementation, evaluation, and record keeping of all Health Aide care.

  • Inventory health office management and inventory control procedures.
  • Ordering of medical supplies and equipment.
  • Establishment and maintenance of complete student health records, including cumulative health records and emergency information for students and staff members.
  • Carry out preventative health service programs (immunizations and fluoride mouth rinse) per applicable laws, health department recommendations and school district policies.
  • Assess and evaluate the health and development status of students needing medical attention during school hours and notify parents/proper authorities, if needed to care for students.
  • Implement policies regarding communicable diseases, infection, and animal bites: exclusion and readmission of students, tuberculosis, and other testing procedures, classroom inspections, communication with parent, administration and government agencies as required.
  • Compiles information required for the evaluation of school health service program.
  • Post emergency information and provides first aid supplies at appropriate locations as required.
  • Assist in conducting regular inspection and safety drills.
  • Assist in identifying, reporting and following up on identified hazards.
  • As requested by the Principal, participates in staff training activities.
  • Provide information to teachers and staff regarding observation for deviations from normal health and procedures for referring students to health office.
  • Provide information to teachers and coaches regarding health problems of students.
  • Carry out first aid and emergency care procedures as required.
  • Provide required identification, health evaluation, case management including development of health component of the IEP and/or nursing care plan and appropriate care for chronically ill or handicapped students.
  • Administer medications according to applicable laws and School District policies.

Summary

The Health Aide of Southgate Academy District is the medical liaison for the school and provides the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absences due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being for all students and staff at Southgate Academy. The Health Aide performs a variety of records management and data control duties involving health issues. The Health Aide shall maintain accuracy of records and files and prepares reports as assigned by the Principal. The Health Aide relies on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals. The Health Aide works in union with the Student Service Facilitator to execute general notification to community school correspondence, reports, and other documentation regarding health issues for the school District Office. The Health Aide maintains confidentiality of sensitive student information and understands and follows oral and written instructions. The Health Aide must be able to compose correspondence independently. The Health Aide, within the framework of established District policies and procedures, serves as the direct link between physicians, families, and community health care services and agencies to enhance the quality and continuity of health care for all students. The Health Aide assumes responsibility for appropriate intervention, management, and/or referral of all students. The Health Aide provides relevant health instruction and guidance to students, parents, teachers, and others concerning a variety of acute, chronic health problems, first aid, diseases, and other health related topics and will uphold professional standards, laws pertaining to health and/or nursing care and District policies. The Health Aide shall confer with federal, state, and local officials concerning changes/laws that would affect the District and alert the Student Service Facilitator to any such changes/laws and execute in written form these changes/laws to the proper school District officials.
