POSITION OVERVIEW

Summit Materials is looking to hire a Regional Safety Director for its South Region (TX, OK, AR) businesses within Aggregates and Asphalt & Construction. The successful candidate will be an energetic, safety at all costs professional with a passion to lead, develop and continuously improve the company’s safety culture and values. You will manage and enforce corporate safety and health policies and procedures; establish and maintain compliance with all safety and health laws and regulations issued by federal, state, and local agencies. Develop and implement safety and health procedures to create and maintain a behavior-based safety culture to minimize the risk of injuries and incidents. This position reports directly to the Regional President with functional reporting to the Corporate Senior Vice President of Safety Performance.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Interacts and works with employees from all levels within the organization to build and maintain a safety culture based on employee engagement and a goal of zero incidents.
  • Develops and ensures a robust behavior-based Safety Culture.
  • Review safety programs and safety training at individual OPCO’s level to identify best practices, gaps, and opportunities for sharing.
  • Work with Summit safety department and other regions to ensure a more consistent approach to implementing safety regulations, rules, and Summit level safety programs.
  • Conduct site visits with OPCO safety and management teams to ensure compliance and identify opportunities to proactively reduce risks or hazards.
  • Conduct regular regional safety team calls and in person meetings to discuss progress, strategy, and new trends.
  • Provides leadership on incident investigation, root cause, and corrective actions.
  • Ensure that safety incident data, alerts and other reports are fully distributed throughout the region.
  • Collaborates with Summit safety to establish annual safety targets, and other projects as necessary.
  • Ensures compliance with all OSHA, MSHA, and FMCSA rules, regulation and reporting requirements.
  • Manages timely reporting and effective case management of the worker's compensation, general liability, auto liability claims as well as minor property damage claims handled in-house.
  • Includes oversight of a robust light duty work program, and occupational medicine clinic relationships.
  • Develops compliance policy and training and provides policy oversight and communication to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and internal company policy.
  • Recommends policy changes.
  • Develop, review, and enforce corporate and site-specific safety policies and procedures.
  • Success achieved by active site visits; analyzing safety risks; championing a behavior-based safety system.
  • Maintains confidentiality of financial information, insurance and litigation documents, employee information (e.g. wage information, discipline, health information) and other sensitive and confidential information.
  • Ensures compliancy with all applicable Federal, State and Local Laws; and
  • All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety/Human Resources or related field required.
  • Master's degree in strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience in occupational safety/risk capacity required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of previous supervisory experience required. Knowledge of OSHA, MSHA, FMCSA
  • Individual must possess an intuitive mind and the ability to think independently. Ability to challenge situations in a constructive manner and present reasonable alternatives.
  • Knowledge of LEAN or continuous improvement processes preferred.
  • Must possess superior problem-solving skills; ability to identify and investigate potential problems with respect all safety issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and manage well at all levels of the organization and with staff at remote locations essential
  • Must possess superior problem solving skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses.
  • Ability to build a strong team, both with direct reports, regional leadership, and field operations.
  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation.
  • Experience in strategic planning and execution.
  • Experience in formulating policy and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret the most complex documents, including financial data.
  • Knowledge of public relations and principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of communication and public relation techniques.
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations.
  • Ability to identify and secure funding/revenue sources.
  • Work requires professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with officials at all levels.
  • Willingness to work a flexible work schedule and travel as necessary
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Must be 18 years in age or older
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to safely drive and operate a vehicle
  • Compliance with all OSHA ,MSHA, and FMCSA regulations.
