Summit is Hiring a Director of Field Operations Near Lafayette, IN

The Director of Field Operations (DFO) role is accountable for organizing, coaching, managing and supporting the General Superintendents (GS), Project Superintendent (PS) and Field Engineering (FE) staff to deliver projects that are constructed safely, completed with high-quality, handed over on time and closed below or at the estimated cost.

The DFO will communicate to ensure that the GS, PS and FE staff clearly understands and demonstrates the role of Superintendent and Field Engineer by consistently meeting expectations at the field level. The DFO will establish a “culture of excellence” that results in consistently meeting and exceeding the Owner’s & Summit’s field execution expectations for safety, quality, schedule and cost performance.

The DFO will provide active oversight and support for the GS, PS and FE staff by conducting routine site visits, project walks and critical evaluation of the project environment to understand each project’s unique challenges. These challenges will be proactively addressed, supported and close with efficiency to mitigate / eliminate risk to the Owner & Summit.

The DFO will utilize existing tools, processes and systems that the GS, PS, and FE staff utilize throughout the construction phase to enhance operational effectiveness, subcontractor productivity and margin performance. As necessary and with cross-collaboration, DFO will create or implement new tools that practically support the field team in execution. In addition, the DFO will provide timely coaching and mentoring to the GS, PS, and FE staff to ensure their personal growth, development, retention and a healthy team environment.

The DFO has a significant role with existing and new subcontractors to ensure cohesion, effective teamwork on the ground, and professionalism on site. The DFO is responsible to maintain, improve and build relationships with our subcontractors. The DFO is also responsible to coach and mentor the field team in relationship building with subcontractors, effective conflict resolution, and emotional intelligence growth to create a productive, professional, and non-hostile environment.

Expectations & Objectives:

1. Safety Leadership:

a. Own/Manage the current safety program including FIR and IRA process.

b. Develop and drive planning for all “high risk” activities (rigging, night work, demolition, etc.)

c. Coach and demonstrate “safety as a value.”

d. Drive safety planning, set expectations, and manage staff performance through jobsite observations.

e. Lead by example and coach through routine field process and procedure training.

2. Quality Leadership:

a. Coach and train “quality as a value.”

b. Drive quality planning and performance management of staff through jobsite observations and corrective actions to eliminate rework.

c. Drive the implementation of consistent project Site Observation Reporting to ensure that Summit’s quality expectations are met.

3. Schedule Leadership:

a. Oversee schedule performance to beat or at a minimum meet the milestone finish dates.

b. Demonstrate schedule leadership by driving the weekly measurement of plan vs. actual performance.

c. Coach the PS staff in “developing a balanced approach” in field decision making that could have an impact on schedule and subcontractor productivity.

4. Collaboration Leadership:

a. Collaborate with the PS/FE staff, the Preconstruction team and Project Management team at each project lifecycle phase to identify opportunities to drive productivity, project execution and overall margin performance.

b. Demonstrate timely problem solving and the ability to mitigate risk by implementing strategies in alignment with each stakeholder’s (Owner, Summit, and Subs) goals & objectives.

5. Field Documentation Leadership:

a. Drive daily reporting documentation (pictures/written narrative) through existing systems.

b. Drive issues identification and documentation through existing system.

c. Drive RFI issues identification and documentation through existing system.

d. Drive the “as-built” documentation process.

6. Lessons Learned Leadership:

a. Drive the lessons learned process to ensure key learnings are understood, documented and shared.

b. Drive the dissemination and ideas from preceding projects, current project to future projects.

Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities:

· Supervise, Lead and Coach GS, PS and FE staff to ensure they effectively manage subcontractors at the jobsite level with a firm, but fair approach.

· Demonstrate leadership by providing clear direction, effective support and positive motivation to staff and subcontractors.

· Recruiting, interviewing, hiring and training of new hires.

· Collaborate with VP of Project Management and VP of Preconstruction Operations on project staffing.

· Develop new and implement existing field execution strategies for achieving operational goals.

· Lead and monitor Summit’s expectations for job site safety, quality, schedules and cost performance.

· Course correct all field safety, quality, schedule and cost performance gaps that do not align with Summit’s defined expectations.

· Training, coaching and monitoring of the Summit reporting systems.

· Stay current, by conducting research and exploring new strategies that drive productivity improvements.

· Routine site inspections followed by formal reporting to the Senior Leadership Team and Safety.

· Ensuring quality control process is developed, understood and implemented by the GS, PS and FE staff at the jobsite level.

· Collaborate with GS, PS and FE staff to ensure availability of tools and materials for maximizing output.

· Manages and assists in the smooth and efficient flow of information Preconstruction through construction and handover.

· Builds, establishes and maintains excellent customer relationships.

· Collaborate with the Director of Safety to ensure the work is planned in advance resulting in a safe environment for all personnel.

· Development of process, training to that process, and implementation of the process for consistent performance across all projects.

· Inspire a positive and safe culture.

· Coach, monitor, course correction of Superintendents performance.

· Monitor customer satisfaction level to ensure Summit Ops is meeting client’s expectations.

· Plan and organize training programs for Superintendents to enhance their job knowledge and skill.

Role Qualifications & Skills:

· Bachelor’s degree in applicable discipline and a minimum of 10 years of experience in Construction as a Project Manager

· Problem-solving Skill: Provide strategic solutions to effectively address operational issues.

· Interpersonal Skill: Able to work with company departmental stakeholders and field teams to ensure smooth work operations.

· Time management Skill: Able to achieve operational objectives within set deadline.

· Computer and Technology Skill: Able to achieve operational tasks and training of others.

Necessary Attributes:

·· Excellent business judgment and acumen demonstrated by consistently achieving profitability objectives and strong project close-outs with client and subcontractor relationships in good standing.

· Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail to effectively prosecute subcontracts, evidenced by a strong command of all applicable contract and legal provisions.

· Ability to consistently analyze and execute financial trade-offs which frequently involve dealing with incomplete data and ambiguity.

· Ability to constantly multi-task and handle competing priorities between Summit business needs, organizational issues, subcontractor issues and sound customer relations.

· Possess judgment to know when to appropriately escalate issues up the chain of command with a strong sense of urgency and initiative. Able to quickly study and react to complex issues.

· Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to confidently and decisively take action.

· Team leader with excellent diplomatic and communication skills, able to handle and resolve conflicts effectively in a firm but fair manner with all parties.

· Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

o While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit or walk for long periods of time; talk or listen; perform fine motor, hand and finger skills in the use of a keyboard, telephone, or writing.

o The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; and reach with arms and/or hands.

o Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

o The employee will spend their time on the physical jobsite; in a construction trailer. This position is exposed to high temperatures; cool/cold temperatures; and loud noises.

o Job site walking, climbing ladders, occasional lifting up to 50 pounds, as well as other onsite activities when required.
