SUNNYVALE CHAMBER CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER JOB DESCRIPTION

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

Since 1946, the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce (SVCOC) has been dedicated to supporting the Sunnyvale business community. Our focus is to create and support the economic initiatives that improve the vitality of our SVCOC members. The new Chief Executive Officer will be charged with building relationships and membership, and focusing on relevant economic development initiatives that strengthen businesses. 

POSITION

The CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER (CEO) will have the experience, abilities and charisma to run a membership driven, non-profit. They will have a “can-do” attitude and work diligently to deliver focused, measurable benefits to the business community. The successful candidate will be organized and well-versed in planning and delivering events, programs, and initiatives. Possess strong budget and financial management experience. They will be a strong collaborator, problem solver, and communicator. The Chief Executive Officer will enhance the chamber's role in the community and deepen relationships with businesses, leaders, local government and elected officials. The CEO has responsibility for profit and loss, fiscal stability, and compliance. They will report to the Board of Directors in accordance with the by-laws and maintain regular communication with the Executive Committee (Board Chair, Immediate Past Chair & Treasurer) in regard to the impact and performance of the organization as well as long term goals, growth, profit, and return on investment.

The position is open to full-time or part-time employment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

· Present, promote and maintain the Chamber as a unique marketing and advocacy partner for business. 

· Responsible for the membership sales and member retention policy.

· Responsible for organization and support of member and community activities, including but limited to art & wine Festivals, award events, Pride Day, holiday events.

· Is acquainted with a broad spectrum of the membership and understands their business goals and challenges.

· Is cognizant of the local economy and proposes to the Board of Directors policies and actions that react to the business needs of the Chamber membership.

· Cultivates good relationships and establishes partnerships with other area non-profit organization with similar goals and objectives.

· Cultivates good relationships with elected and non-elected local government officials to advance Chamber goals and objectives.

· Maintains a high level of communication among the Chamber officers, directors, staff, committees, and members, as well as between the Chamber and the general public.

· Monitors the activities of committees and provides necessary assistance.

· Oversees all staff activities of the Chamber including the hiring, development, and management of employees to support organizational goals.

· Prepares an annual budget for action by the Chamber Board of Directors and coordinates expenditures consistent with approved budget.

· Reports on-a-monthly basis, the current status of the membership, finances, and activities to the Executive Committee and Board of Directors.

· Oversees all Chamber communications including written, electronic, and verbal.

· Stay up to date on ever-changing technology and how it may impact our business members.

· Ensures compliance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, and standards.

· Apply innovative thinking and performance measurements to analyze and support strategic decision making.

REQUIREMENTS

· Has strong leadership skills and managerial experience, with the ability to manage through influence and make decisions under pressure.

· Has sales, sponsorship, and/or fundraising experience.

· Has well-versed public speaking skills and ability to write effectively.

· Has excellent financial skills.

· Has solid knowledge of Microsoft Office, and familiarity or the ability to learn Growth Zone. 

· Has flexibility to attend evening and weekend events.

· At the direction of the Board, the CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER creates and implements the strategic plan for the Chamber.

· Be responsible for the overall performance of the Chamber’s membership activities including membership acquisition, stewardship and retention.

· Oversees and assesses the line-up, schedule, design, implementation, budget, and structure for the Chamber’s programs and events.

· Be responsible for the Chamber’s role in the economic development of business retention/expansion, infrastructure, workforce/education, health and safety, civic innovation and regional collaboration with other economic development organizations.

· Represents the Chamber on a variety of public policy issues at the local, state, and federal levels which requires development of platforms, messaging, advocacy channels, and strategic relationships.

· Ensures the Chamber establishes and follows generally accepted accounting and financial practices that ensures organizational safety and soundness, achieves budget targets, sustains operations, and grows capacity for new initiatives.

· Creates and maintains a dynamic and forward-thinking public image for the organization, including strategies for marketing, communications, media relations, community relations and public speaking.

A SUCCESSFUL CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER WILL:

· Be highly networked in the Bay Area and able to build strong relationships with Chamber members and community leaders.

· Interact with members, sponsors, and community leaders in a professional manner and help engage them in support of the Chamber’s objectives.

· Be required to achieve aggressive business goals including membership sales, membership retention, event sponsorships, and general financial and organizational goals.

· Utilize financial data and membership metrics to develop organizational goals and identify/assess potential high-impact opportunities.

· Have a broad knowledge of industry acumen, entrepreneurship, and innovation.

· Have strong understanding of the political landscape for change and collaboration with civic leadership and partner organizations.

· Demonstrate strategic thinking skills and the ability to lead an organization through growth. 

· Adept at coalition building, relationship management, and negotiating complex agreements.

· Exceptional communication skills both in writing and orally with members, potential members, elected officials, outside organizations, media outlets, and the Board of Directors.

· Possess and demonstrate high standards of integrity, work ethic, trustworthiness, and personal responsibility.

· Have strategic vision with extensive and nuanced skills to drive change management, mission fulfillment, and operational outcomes.

· Have highly developed interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing sales or equivalent degree OR 6 or more years of equivalent experience in a related field.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

Experience:

A minimum of 6 years of successful experience in executive management and leadership positions within the private, public, or nonprofit sectors demonstrating progressively greater responsibility.

Pay and benefits:

  • The salary range is $90,000 to $115,000, full-time, based on experience. A stipend is available for health insurance. Part-time salary will be negotiated based on hours and experience.
