General Summary:

The Assistant Manager Safety and Health will evaluate, plan, organize and implement the safety and health management programs, policies, and procedures for the company. This position will also manage the overall training programs as it pertains to job tasks, safety and health, and conduct periodic inspections of company facilities for hazardous conditions. Following such inspections the Senior Assistant Manager Safety and Health will make appropriate recommendations to management. In addition will collect safety and health data for record keeping and reporting purposes and collaborate with outside agencies and vendors to ensure safety compliance. The position receives guidance with respect to general objectives. In the majority of tasks and projects assigned, the incumbent determines methods, work sequence, scheduling, and how to achieve objectives of assignments while operating within specific policy guidelines.

Regular work hours are Monday- Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm, as well as occasional Saturdays for company-wide meetings and safety behavior audits. The incumbent must practice absolute confidentiality. Good judgment and common sense are required in all duties and any other tasks as assigned and directed by Manager Safety and Health. Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%) may be required. This job description provides an overview of responsibilities and task to be performed. It is not intended to be an all-inclusive job description as needs tend to change over time.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complies with all safety policies, procedures and established safe practices and ensures that all direct reports do the same. Reports all unsafe conditions and actions to a supervisor and/or the Manager Safety and Health.
  • Trains, develops, and monitors the safety practices (including PPE) of his/her employees through regularly scheduled safety meetings, one on one development, reminders, and disciplinary action if necessary.
  • Follows all requirements listed in the Supervisor Safety Procedure Manual (SSPM) including, but not limited to, safety training, emergency procedures, accident reporting and investigation, and employee observations.
  • Ensures compliance of production staff with all policies and procedures, OSHA, MSHA, and NCDOT guidelines. Maintains a clean and orderly work area and meets other housekeeping needs as required by Sunrock, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) - MSHA 30 CFR 56.20003, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.22.
  • Evaluates, plans, organizes, implements, and follows up on safety management programs, safety and health policies, and safety and health procedures as directed by OSHA 29 CFR 1904, 1910, MSHA 30 CFR 46,50,56,62 FMCSA 49 CFR 40, 380,382,383,387,390-397,399, 13 CAC 07F.0100, .0400, .0600, 13 NCAC 6 .000-.0600, NC General Statutes Chapter 74 Article 2A, and NFPA 70 E.
  • Evaluates, plans, organizes, implements, and follows up on job task and, safety and health training programs.
  • Conducts periodic inspections of company facilities and makes recommendations to management and/or Manager Safety and Health as prescribed by federal and state regulations.
  • Collects safety and health data for record keeping and reporting. Record keeping is both for internal reporting (executive and management presentations) and external reporting (OSHA 300 Logs, MSHA 7000.2, MSHA 1000.1)
  • Filing and assisting in managing all claims (Worker’s Compensation, Auto, and General Liability.
  • Organizes, implements, and follows up on internal company safety award and recognition programs.
  • Submits company safety data for external award recognition to various agencies and associations.
  • Participates in Freedom of Information Act requests, interrogatories, and other legal proceedings as required.
  • Disseminates pertinent safety and health information throughout the chain of command as necessary.
  • Complies with all safety policies, practices, and procedures. Reports all unsafe activities to his/her supervisor and/or management.
  • Participates in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
  • Provides leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill
  • Assist in facilitating informational safety and health meetings with mid-level management.
  • Assists in conducting safety initiatives/training minimally once annually.
  • Assists in coordinating the company’s annual ready mixed concrete (“RMC”) Driver Rodeo Contest.
  • Maintains and inspects first aid kits and AEDs for compliance.
  • Participates in bi-monthly staff meetings.
  • Periodically reviews and maintains MSHA binders (located at quarry offices)
  • Attends seminars, webinars, and conferences as required by the executive team and Manager Safety and Health.
  • Maintains online files for information, training documents, records, forms, MSDS, etc. on the company’s share drive or other required system.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customer, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches, and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamental of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity. Word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
  • Handles multiple tasks/projects simultaneously.
  • Prioritizes, organizes, and delegates assignments.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A or B.S) from four-year college or university preferred. Minimum of five (5) years of related industry or safety experience required.
  • Experience working in an outdoor manufacturing, construction environment a plus.
  • Other combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Current North Carolina Driver’s License required
  • Ability to Obtain first aid/CPR Certification
