The Grounds Department performs work related to the appearance and condition of the campus grounds and athletic fields. The Grounds department will also maintain roads, walkways and parking lots. Duties include:

  • Clean grounds by sweeping, raking, shoveling and removing debris, leaves, branches, etc.
  • Clear sites and prepare them for planting by raking, tilling soil, adding mulch and digging.
  • Plant seeds, bushes, trees, etc. using hand or power equipment.
  • Cut grass using lawnmowers; fertilizes and waters grounds; prune bushes and trees; remove or transplant bushes or trees.
  • Remove dead trees by cutting and splitting logs using chainsaws, sledge hammers and wedges.
  • Load trucks with debris, logs, dirt, etc. using hand or power equipment.
  • Construct, repair or paint fences.
  • Break up concrete to repair holes using hand or power equipment. ·Mix and apply concrete and asphalt for patches.
  • Remove trash and debris from roads, walkways and parking lots by sweeping and shoveling by hand.
  • Remove snow and ice from walkways by shoveling and operating snow removal equipment.
  • Plow roads and parking lots with trucks and tractors.
  • Mix salt and sand for use on walkways and roads and spread by hand or power equipment.
  • Load and unload trucks and move furniture.
  • Shovel, dig ditches, and install signs.
  • Line and prepare fields for athletic events.
  • Apply pesticides or fertilizer in accordance with State pesticide application regulations.

A Facilities Operations Assistant 2 (Grounds) will supervise and schedule the day-to-day work of the grounds crews. The person shall have a variety of duties within the Grounds department, such as:

  • Responds, prioritizes, and schedules routine to urgent grounds maintenance service as requested.
  • Provides training to staff by demonstrating proper use of equipment and materials and the performance of specific tasks to meet quality standards.
  • Periodically spot-checks work to make sure instructions are followed, work is progressing according to schedule, and materials and equipment are being used properly.
  • Maintains written records of employee time, work performed, and materials used.
  • Reports orally or in writing to higher level staff on the progress of projects.
  • Plans or assists in the planning of landscaping and other grounds projects by preparing rough sketches, schedules, and estimates of the staff, materials and equipment needed to accomplish the project.
  • Supervises the grounds department inventory system, including the requisitioning and proper distribution and control of equipment and supplies.
Job Requirements:


Minimum Requirements:

Non-competitive: one year of service as a Facility Operations Assistant 1 or Motor Vehicle Operator; OR, two years of full-time, verifiable experience in - 7 - custodial, grounds, or maintenance operation or assisting in a journey-level trade. When required to operate motor vehicles, incumbents must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred candidates will possess a NYSDEC 7A and 3 pesticide certifications.
