Summary:

Epidemiologists are responsible for coordinating investigation and surveillance activities throughout Texas pertaining to COVID-19 associated deaths, variant surveillance, and special case investigations such as vaccine breakthrough cases and similar infectious diseases such as MERS and SARS.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish and use appropriate data collection systems and procedures.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and interpret data pertaining to COVID-19 associated deaths, variant surveillance, and special case investigations.
  • Collaborate with other DSHS program staff in the planning, development, and implementation of field research studies.
  • Create, maintain, and update case definitions, case investigation guidelines, and forms pertaining to COVID-19 and similar infectious diseases.
  • Coordinate with novel coronavirus subject matter experts for planning, surveillance, and response.
  • Review patient medical charts to collect demographic, medical, and laboratory findings and exposure histories.
  • Consult with physicians, healthcare facilities, state and national organizations, public health officials, and the public for special case investigations.
  • Coordinate interstate and intrastate communications surrounding investigations.
  • Contribute to the development and preparation of investigation reports, presentations, and manuscripts.
  • Provide COVID updates on various stakeholder calls, assist with data analysis, and produce reports.
  • Direct, review, initiate, plan, and supervise epidemiological studies and surveillance projects.

COVID Contract Management (Additional Responsibilities):

  • Develop and approve schedules and priorities for the COVID contract group.
  • Manage performance evaluation activities, time and leave records, travel, and training; resolve employee relations issues.
  • Oversee all operations of the COVID group in collaboration with the Unit Director and Unit Managers.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles and functions of public health.
  • Knowledge of research planning and evaluation methods in epidemiology.
  • Knowledge of laws and rules applicable to confidentiality and the management of protected health information.
  • Knowledge and experience with epidemiology.
  • Knowledge of advanced statistical techniques and methods.
  • Knowledge of statistical software, especially SAS, SPSS, and/or Stata, and Microsoft Office products, especially Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.
  • Skill in effective verbal communication, including preparation and presentation of complex data analysis.
  • Skill in identifying problems, evaluating alternatives, and negotiating and implementing solutions to data and research problems.
