Position OverviewKU Recreation Services, a Department within Student Affairs, has a campus-wide impact by improving the quality of life for all students, faculty, staff, affiliates, retirees, alumni, spouses, and domestic partners through its fitness and wellness initiatives. KU Recreation Services provides state-of-the-art recreational programs, facilities, and services.
Indoor facilities include the Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center (ASRFC), which is comprised of many different activity spaces: 16,000 square feet of cardiovascular resistance training and free weight equipment, six indoor basketball/volleyball courts, a three-lane suspended jogging track, an aerobics studio, a martial arts studio, three racquetball courts, one squash court, dasher board system multipurpose gym, a 42-foot climbing wall, and bouldering wall, two outdoor basketball courts, conference room, and a multi-media room. Outdoor facilities include several acres of grass field spaces at the Shenk Recreational Sports Complex and two artificial turf fields, including Central Field and Superfield, four lighted sand volleyball courts, and four lighted tennis courts. KU Recreation Services utilizes the Robinson Center for its aquatic activities.
Programs within KU Recreation Services include Fitness, Intramurals, Sports Clubs, and Outdoor Pursuits. Fitness offers group fitness (“KU Fit”) with classes focused on cardio, strength, mind and body, Personal Training, and Fitness Assessments. Intramurals play team sports, team tournaments, and individual activities. Sports Clubs participate in a wide variety of competitive, recreational, and instructional sports. Outdoor Pursuits offers a rock-climbing wall and an equipment rental center.
Job DescriptionFacility Management (50%):
  • Oversee the maintenance of all KU Recreation Services facilities, including the ASRFC, Central Field, Superfield Shenk Sports Complex, tennis courts and sand volleyball courts.
  • Develop and maintain strategic plans for facility maintenance and custodial operations, aligning with departmental goals and industry standards.
  • Conduct regular inspections and evaluations to ensure facility improvements and compliance with safety standards.
  • Mediate conflicts, enforce policies and procedures, and ensure a safe environment through comprehensive risk management guidelines and OSHA standards.
  • Manage inventory and process equipment purchases, ensuring operational efficiency.
  • Develop and assess preventative maintenance schedules to extend the lifespan of equipment and facilities, reducing the likelihood of unexpected failures and costly repairs.
  • Develop a process to streamline maintenance and custodial operations while maintaining quality assurance, ensuring efficient and effective service delivery.
  • Manage and prioritize work orders, ensuring time and appropriate responses to maintenance requests.
  • Analyze work orders to determine whether tasks can be completed internally or if they require external contractors, optimizing resource allocation and cost-effectiveness.
Supervision and Personnel Management (20%):
  • Supervise full-time, part-time, and student staff, including recruitment, training, and evaluation, currently 7 full time staff and 3-7 student staff.
  • Foster a positive and productive work environment, promoting teamwork and professional growth.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide direction and instruction to staff.
  • Develop performance goals for staff, ensuring continuous professional development and expanding professional networks to enhance team capabilities and opportunities.
Budget Management (15%):
  • Develop and oversee budgets for facility maintenance and custodial, utilizing budget forecasting models.
  • Monitor expenses, providing accurate financial reporting to leadership.
Safety and Risk Management (10%):
  • Lead safety and risk management initiatives, ensuring compliance with university and national standards.
  • Coordinate with relevant departments to implement and document safety procedures.
  • Develop and conduct safety training sessions for all staff.
  • Regularly inspect facilities and address safety concerns promptly.
Other Duties as Assigned (5%):
  • Perform additional tasks as required to support the overall mission of KU Recreation Services

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Education, Communications, Facilities Management, Recreation Administration, Sport Management, Higher Education or closely related field.
  • Five years of experience in facilities management, maintenance, custodial, or a related field as reflected in work history and application materials.
  • Two years of experience supervising full-time staff, as evidenced in application materials.
  • Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
  • Work experience requiring general computer skills as demonstrated by work history and application material.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Business, Education, Communications, Facilities Management, Recreation Administration, Sport Management, Higher Education or closely related field or bachelor’s and 5 years of progressive facility management experience.
  • Experience in the following trades: carpentry, plumbing, custodial, HVAC, or similar, as demonstrated in application materials.
  • Work experience in project management within a sports, recreation, or fitness setting, preferred, demonstrating the ability to plan, execute, and oversee projects effectively, as evidenced in application materials.
  • Experience with the software systems currently used by the Recreation Services, such as Fusion, Connect2, Brassring, and Maximo.
  • Work Experience with budgets, risk management procedures, scheduling, and staff training.
