Bargaining Unit: Non Represented - Supervisor

Rate of Pay: $82,992 annually DOE

Summary
Using the Total Laboratory Management approach, the Lab Assistant Supervisor assumes responsibilities in the following three areas; 1) resource management, 2) operations management, and 3) quality management. This includes scheduling, training, supervising and coordinating activities of personnel engaged in laboratory work functions. The supervised staff are licensed phlebotomists working in the pre-analytical and post-analytical phases of laboratory operations. This role is patient centered, providing care that is safe, timely and accurate in order to deliver an excellent patient experience. This is a non-technical supervisory position and does not require the performance of any functions relative to the Intra-analytical phase of operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides orientation, training and on-going competency assessments for employees assigned to the pre-analytical work unit.
  • Coordinates and actively monitors quality indicators as appropriate for work unit.
  • Coordinates and assists in the development and maintenance of pre-analytical Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for phlebotomy and specimen processing while supporting Infection Control policies relative to the handling and transport of potentially infectious materials.
  • Coordinates laboratory support of employee and community wellness events as needed.
  • Actively supports the Laboratory safety and quality programs and ensures alignment with the health system programs.
  • Works collaboratively with peers and hospital-wide management staff to solve problems and improve processes throughout the health system.
  • Follows established procedures and evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis.
  • Recognizes factors that affect patient satisfaction and customer service and takes appropriate action to resolve related issues and improve satisfaction for all customer types. Participates in and contributes to patient satisfaction meetings and agendas.
  • Establishes resources to support providers, patients and phlebotomists with inquiries such as test price quoting, patient preparation, specimen requirements for certain tests, reference laboratory send out questions and follow-up.
  • Effectively communicates with physicians, midlevel providers and nursing personnel regarding unusual specimen requirements, collections, complex test ordering practices and pre-analytical and post-analytical issues.
  • Supports oversight of Occupational Health Services provided through the hospital laboratory point of access locations. Maintains knowledge of Department of Transportation Drug Screen Testing and assures competency assessments and re-certifications of staff performing drug screen testing are current
  • Supervises the Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) activities performed by laboratory staff and assures staff competency.
  • Oversees EKG performance, verifying receipt of result interpretations and reporting results to ordering provider.
  • Enters EKG, Pathology, Phlebotomy and other charging as delegated by the Director.
  • This role will maintain competency in the supervised areas in order to assist staff and cover a shift as needed.
  • Demonstrates System Values in performance and behavior.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Carries out supervisory responsibility in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training, assigning, coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; administering scheduling systems; communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, appraising, and reviewing job contributions; enforcing policies and procedures.

Minimum Education/Experience
Certificate of completion from college or vocational school Completion of an accredited Phlebotomy training program and 3 or more years relevant experience

Required Licenses/Certifications
California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I - Upon hire

Other Experience/Qualifications

Required

  • 3 years’ experience as a Phlebotomist.
  • Knowledge of the principles and procedures of clinical laboratory operations in phlebotomy and specimen processing

Preferred:

  • Nevada Lab Assistant certification
  • 5 years of experience as a Phlebotomist in a hospital laboratory setting with prior laboratory management experience.
  • Experience with legal drug test collections and with clinical laboratory charges and billing practices in a hospital laboratory setting
