Job DescriptionWe have been retained by RUMC, a distinguished healthcare network and respected teaching institution, to recruit their Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer (CMO). RUMC, a not-for-profit healthcare network, delivers high-quality, comprehensive, acute, primary, specialty, and surgical care to Staten Island’s ethnically diverse communities and neighboring areas.
The SVP, CMO will assume a critical leadership position within the organization, reporting directly to the CEO. In this pivotal role, they will closely collaborate with senior executives and the Board of Directors to devise and implement strategies that align with RUMC's short- and long-term plans, ensuring coherence with broader organizational priorities. They will engage, integrate, coordinate, oversee, lead, and manage all physicians and advance practitioners, employing metrics and organizational vision to guide and direct activities.
We seek an individual with strong leadership qualities and exceptional people skills, capable of setting a compelling example. The ideal candidate will demonstrate adaptability in navigating the dynamic environment of an independent health network and will be responsible for all clinical, quality, administrative, compliance, operational acumen, and performance improvement activities.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as the clinical strategist for RUMC’s Executive Team and representative of the medical profession to senior executives, the board of directors, and the community at large.
  • Provide strategic direction on the delivery of medical services, fostering teamwork within a dynamic executive environment and across the organization. Promote positive relationships and employ effective problem-solving skills.
  • Lead in transforming the care model to align with the organization's vision of a value-based, clinically integrated system committed to patient-centered, efficient, timely, effective, equitable, and safe care delivery.
  • Establish, maintain and implement key quality metrics to assess patient care quality. Drive ongoing continuous quality improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities for enhancement and overseeing process improvements.
  • Implement Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement programs, including performance reviews for medical staff and peer review systems. Report all quality efforts, identified issues, and tasks to relevant committees and executives.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of systems and processes to uphold the highest standards of care, patient safety, and evidence-based medicine.
  • Collaborate with Executive Leadership and clinicians to analyze risk management cases and suggest system improvements. Review and revise medical care policies and protocols as needed.
  • Maintain statistical data related to patient care and outcomes to drive continuous improvement.
  • Identify succession planning needs and design recruitment and retention processes for high-quality physicians and providers.
  • Initiate and monitor referral utilization review processes. Foster team building and collaboration, providing mentorship and coaching to medical leadership.
  • Identify new clinical programs and services, implementing national best practices and guidelines. Develop collaborations with community agencies to support program development.
  • Provide direct patient care, ensuring complete and accurate documentation of findings and recommendations at each visit according to established protocols. Manage medical budgets and maintain credentialing procedures for all medical personnel.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and relational skills with diverse cultural and ethnic groups in the community.
Education
  • Doctorate from an accredited school of medicine
Industry Expertise And Operational Experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of current health care trends and best practices, including all clinical, quality, compliance, operational acumen and change management.
  • Established credentials and reputation for credibility within the industry.
  • Proven track record of providing effective leadership and administrative guidance.
Leadership Experience
  • Capacity to engage with the community and mobilize resources.
  • Extensive leadership accomplishments in cultivating strong relationships between hospital and physicians.
  • Effective representation of the network as its primary clinical spokesperson. Consistent history of fostering positive relationships with independent entities. Ability to engage with the community and effectively mobilize resources.
