TASSC International is Hiring a Legal Administrative Assistant Near Washington, DC

TASSC is seeking a passionate and dedicated administrative professional in supporting the day-to-day operations of its Legal Services Program.

Location: Washington, D.C.

About Us: The Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition (TASSC) International is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that provides services to survivors of torture. Our mission is to provide compassionate legal services and advocacy that empowers individuals to rebuild their lives and secure protection under international and domestic law. TASSC recognizes the psychological effects of torture and assists survivors with their immediate medical, psychological, legal, housing, and employment needs. Four programs are the cornerstones of our work and address the main areas of concern for many survivors: social, legal, career, and advocacy. TASSC’s wraparound services encourage and supplement the efforts of survivors who come to us seeking independence, self-sufficiency, and healthy futures. TASSC’s integrated services also empower survivors to become leaders in our organization and our broader community. TASSC is proud to be survivor-led, with survivors serving as Board Members and the present Executive Director. TASSC has thrived because of countless hours of volunteer work from survivors who have taken leading roles in advocacy and community support.

About the Role: This position is crucial in supporting our attorneys in providing high-quality legal representation to survivors of torture seeking asylum and other legal protections in the United States. The ideal candidate will be a detail-oriented and organized individual with strong communication and interpersonal skills. The Legal Administrative Assistant reports to the Director of Legal Services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Case Management: Create, organize, and maintain client files; track case tasks and deadlines.
  • Intake: Conduct initial intake and screenings of potential clients to gather relevant information and documentation; provide referrals and address basic inquiries concerning program capacity and services.
  • Legal Support: Prepare first drafts of correspondence and legal documents; prepare attorneys for client meetings; coordinate with interpreters, experts, and forensic examiners to support client needs.
  • Research: Conduct preliminary legal research to support case preparation and strategy; assist in gathering information and evidence relevant to ongoing cases such as credible reports on country conditions.
  • Office Administration: Manage office supplies, schedule appointments, return phone calls, and maintain office organization; receive, sort, and scan incoming mail into case management systems; forward mail to clients and community members.
  • Community Outreach: Assist with community outreach activities including managing contact lists, drafting and editing presentations, and attending events with coalition partners.
  • Operational Support: Prepare attorney expense reports and assist with budget management and grant reporting.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one year of experience as a legal or administrative assistant or a related role in the legal field (experience in immigration law a plus).
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and legal case management software (experience with Docketwise a plus).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to client confidentiality and ethical legal practices.
  • Compassion and understanding of the challenges faced by survivors of trauma.
  • Ability to work independently while also being a team player.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of three days per week of in-office presence at the Washington, DC office is required.
  • The Legal Assistant will work 32 hours per week.

Compensation:

· $25-$28 per hour. This is an hourly, non-exempt position.

Benefits:

  • TASSC’s generous benefits package includes eligibility for 80% paid health, dental, and vision insurance; a retirement match for employees of six months or more; paid federal holidays, 15 days of annual leave per year, and 12 days of sick leave per year in the first year of employment.
